In the past two days my Beige G3 Desktop's sound system has gradually failed. Now all I am getting out of the computer are scratches and loud static.
Here are my observations:
1. It's not the OS. The problem persists in OS X and OS 9, turned the system volumn off, the scratches continued.
2. It's not the speakers, tested them with my cd players and boom boxes, they work fine.
3. Sound still plays but it's barely noticeable behind all the scratches and "noise".
4. My room configuration hasn't changed.
has anyone experienced similar problems?
are there any other possible causes I haven't thought of?
can I just buy a new sound card and plug it into one of the PCI slots?
thanks,
Anthony

Try reseating the audio card. This has often worked for people with beige G3s with loss of sound.

which one is the audio card? is it the "personality" card that's between the PCI and RAM slots?

ok i took out the AV card and plugged it back in, now I have no sound at all... great... is it the card or the motherboard that's shot?
I wanna just go out and buy a new card but what if it's not? Any other things I could try?

just to make sure i don't get obvious replies, I did press the reset button on the motherboard next to the PCI slots, still no sound
so here's the conclusion:
took out the card, put it back in, reset the motherboard, now I still have no sound...
can I go buy a cheap PCI sound card at any computer store and have it work in my Mac?

Be sure you push on the card hard; if you can see the tops of the gold contacts, the card isn't in all the way.
If the card is in all the way, and you're still getting no sound, your card is probably bad.

just reread your first post.
Do you get sound through head phones?
If you were having static, that sounds like a bad speaker, or contact between the speaker and the sound card.

gawd I am not looking for obvious replies...
I plugged in a different set of speakers and they had static as well, I had unplugged all speakers and used the computer's built in speakers, static also. That was before I took out the card and firmly set it back in, and resulted in having no sound at all.
Can I go buy a cheap PC audio card for the Mac?
