Strange Mysterious HD Problem

I have a PowerMac 7100AV with a NewerTech G3/266 upgrade card. Until fine, it has been running fine under OS 8.6. However, one fine day SETI came crashing down on my head, forcing me to force restart. Now, whenever I try to boot from that HD, I get the evil ? at startup. When I boot from the 8.5 CD, though, the drive shows up just fine, but it won't let me install 8.5. I have done tests with TTPro 2, and it repaired everything it could find. Is there any way to fix this or is it messages from aliens? (Remember, it all started with SETI  )

yes, odd... i wish people would have problems that i have seen before 
have you got DiskWarrior? not saying this will fix it for sure but it might, honestly i have no clue what happened here with your HD

Umm... what does the installer say about the disk? It usually tells you why it won't work. That info would help us help you...

It was a message about the disk drivers, but I fixed it now. I copied the System and Finder files from the CD and then reinstalled 8.5, and now it works. The aliens have left me

hey good thinking, copying those files to the HD to enable a boot, then immediately reinstall MacOS... see how much you learn when things go wrong?
and see how your brain goes soft (like mine) when things don't?

I have a 7300/200 here that had similar problems you have. (It's a Seagate Barracuda drive BTW) Every once in awhile it would crash and then I couldn't boot off of it. So I'd reinstall everything, and fix the disk drivers and it'd work for a few more weeks. Got old fast. Finally, a few weeks ago it crashed and I couldn't get it to boot *at all* off this disk. I finally replaced it with a nice new 9GB Ultra SCSI.
I hope you don't have a recurrent problem like this drive. It actually works *fine* as a secondary drive, I just can't boot off of it! I don't keep any critical data on it, just games now But I haven't had a lick of problem with it as a secondary drive since getting the 9 gig one.
