I have a 180 Mhz Performa, running OS 8.6, which came with 16MB RAM (8 soldered on, 8 on a DIMM). I recently installed an additional 32MB DIMM, which works ok, except that the longer I use the computer for, the more the free memory decreases. In the 'About this computer' box, the amounts of memory simply do not add up to 48MB. Can anyone tell me why, or how to fix this? Also, is it usual for OS 8.6 with not a huge number of extensions, to take up about 25 MB??

it's called 'memory leakage' and is common (can you say 'gimme MacOS X'?)
usually it is browsers that are the great offenders
you can try Finder's Friend, MacOS Purge, and DFA... DFA being the best bet for reclaiming 'lost' memory, see this: http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Foru...ML/000818.html
oh, and beg/borrow/steal more RAM, max that performa out with RAM, do it now!

Whew.. I'm glad there's a way to deal with this - I thought it was just one of those things I would have to deal with. I've noticed how bad Netscape is about that stuff. I'll be bumping my 5200/75 LC to 48 MB RAM a week from today (yay!), so hopefully that will help decrease the effect.
OS 8.5 / 8.6 is really a memory hog. You have to turn off any and all extensions you don't need in order to tame it. I think I've got 8.5 down to about 8 megs with no network/internet extensions. If you don't know what extensions you need / don't need, start a thread and we'll discuss 'em. That's a good idea...

I've got 9.04 that's sucking up 60megs of RAM...ouch! Thnak god there's another 270 megs after that 
Also, to help tame the memory beast, I've got multiple partitions with the various systems that I use. Most of the time, I'll just run 7.5.5 or 7.1.3, but when I need programs that call on higher features, I'll just boot up 8.1 or 8.6. Easy way, if you know how to use the older systems.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Yes it did seem to be IE 5 that was eating the memory. Aren't these message board things good? Re. Extensions - I try to keep things to a minimum, but I need internet, Quicktime, printing, network, etc, etc, and Re. partitioning - my machine only has a 1.5 GB HD, so there isn't much point, and it would probably screw it up. I could use 7.5 for games, though. Hmm...
