My Dad's got an old 4400 running OS 8.1(or 8.0?) which he wants to make USB-friendly. He's already bought the upgrade card and has no concern about fitting it. My concern is will his OS suport USB? What is the earliest OS to accept USB?

I think OS 8.5.1 or 8.6 was the first to offer USB support. However, OS 9.0.4 is by far the best OS for USB support.

The USB drivers (avilable from Apple's Support pages) might work with OS 8, but they will work under 8.1 for sure. The origional iMac's shipped with OS 8.1 until the October '98 release of 8.5.

USB was first supported under Mac OS 8.1. There are also updated drivers on apples site.
