....powerup going on here! Scott was catching me again after I passed him so thought I'd take advantage of his being away to sneak a lead

All adds to the team effort.

Nice bump in the power there DAlex. I stopped processing on Dfold for a while and slipjack got way ahead of me so now I am trying to sneek back in front. I'm getting steam rolled by that jamesa an the 30 PIII farm my five little boxes are no match for that kind of power.

And the electrical storm that went through last night did not help either.

As you may have noticed CobraMac and Mikkyo decided to step in and crunch for a while and put us all to shame.

Enola is even being nice enough to let us try and catch up. I figure a couple months and I might get there.

It's all in fun and for a good cause, I hope.

Good to see you return to the fold as well.

Things seem a bit quiet on the forum at the mo', not as much chatter as there used to be.

Well, time to crunch, chat later .

Ahh, that makes sense, it's the reverse here in the UK, the schools only recently closed.

And I should know about outside chores - just finished replanting half my garden and buuilding a playhouse for my daughter

Uh oh, I guess I'd better watch out! I've got about another two weeks before my boosters come off and then it's back to just my two XP machines and G4 733.

Let us know how the netbooting goes, I've got a couple of spare mobos I can get my hands on - unfortunately thay are backed up by my complete lack of knowledge of Linux

Well I am only back in part, My 1.3 ghz Celeron box kept freezing up on D2OL (bioterrorism cure project), so I am moving it back over here for MacNN. It is only 60,000 units a day, but maybe that will help. It is crunching a lot faster then it used to though, in part to the new speedup, and in part because I moved it from Windows to Linux. The Celeron was always a dog under windows, but actually does pretty well under Linux.

My other 6.4 ghz are still on D2OL under my team banner.

If I am lucky, I can slip past skibikeski before he notices though.

BTW Welcome back Dalex.

Shaktai I'm surprised that you even have time for computers with that nice new camera that you have. Pictures look great and I like the comparison that you did with the other camera.

As far as Skibikeski is concerned I think he has left the building.
He is probably out there enjoying his time in between school sessions. I expect that we will start hearing from him when it is time to study again.

I'm seriously considering getting one of those Nikon CoolPix 5700s. Are they good?

[edit: Shaktai, your "Sunset Sillohette from my balcony" is one seriously good photo! I was wondering, would you have that as a larger version? I'd love it for a desktop background... as big as you've got it. Thanks!]

As long as you are aware of the 5700's shortcomings, and can live within them, they are great. I really like mine.

Check out the Nikon forum at http://www.dpreview.com. Just keep in mind that some folks really have a tendency to overstate problems. You will see a lot of stuff about autofocus problems. Read them carefully though. It is heavily over-exagerated. The 5700 does have a lot of options and a steeper learning curve.

PM or e-mail me if you want to know more. or check out the 5700 shots at the link below. Full size images and full EXIF data is available on most of them.

As to the sunset, if it is the one I am thinking about, that one was taken with my old Oly C2100UZ. I believe I have it available at http://www.pbase.com/brdavid/ now also. The largest size is 1600x1400. Feel free to download it (select original size to view, and I hope you aren't on a modem, if you are be patient.)

Edit: Whoops, just realized that Sunset from my balcony (there are two of them) was shot with the Sony F707. It is available at a much larger size, up to 2500 pixels wide instead of 1600.

I love dpreview - it's a great site! They've just put the 4500 review up, and I'm eagerly awaiting the 5700 review.

I've currently got an old Sony DSC-S70; for it's age, it takes great photos (http://homepage.mac.com/allworth/index.html) but it's so slow; the shutter lag, and focus times are ridiculous. I would love a fast camera! Maybe I'll wait for the revision 2 version of the 5700.

Thanks for your advice and your offer of help, too

Glad you like it All those MCSE drones out there drive me nuts - MS makes money out of them for the qalification, and then they go forth and multiply MS installations.

I was responsible for hiring at an ISP for a while (kind of, I sifted through the CVs) and I had a great time... "oh dear, he's got an MCSE, better file it in the little round filing cabinet under the desk..."

But MS's business model truly is incredible

Hey every bit helps, I've only got two more days until I Lose 9 of my machines (well, my mates machines, he loaned me them for a dfold push for a couple of weeks, he wants to get back to his seti crunching).

So I'll be down to 2xAthlon XPs, G4 733, P3 933 and occasionally my iBook.

Oh, um, the dump isn't done yet.
It's enough to take a full hour on my DSL line (sorry about the lag while I do it)

Yeah, he's coming, but I'll get my top 10 spot very soon.

Then it's back to seti for my run to 10K by oct 1st.
