So I am returning to seti after a few years absence. Never ran seti on a G4 before. Just downloaded the newest version, is it MP Aware yet? Also, is it altivec enhanced? How much faster does the command line version run than the GUI? I used to run it on a 500 MHz G3 and i was way into the stats part of it. I'm not going to get too into it now only because I plan on returning to RC5 soon as the next one starts up.

Not multi-processor aware and not alti-vec enabled. You can run 2 instances of it though on a dual processor machine. I hear the command line is noticably faster then the GUI or screensaver, but haven't ran it in a while myself so not sure.

Well it seems like my dual 533 is going MUCH slower than my single G3 500 / 7500 upgrade running OS 9 was doing a few years ago. Though back then i used to reboot the computer when i was going to run it and start it up with a ram disk, minimal extension set etc etc i went nuts. Are there any way to get my OS X client running faster without going crazy like that?

I think SETI now does more/further tests on each unit therefore taking longer than it did a year ago? someone please correct me if im wrong.
run the CLI client & seti dockling to control it, runs much faster than the GUI client! MUCH

By what percent should the CLI increase over the screensaver.app? 10-15%?
Just curious--I just got two instances of the CLI running on my dual gig and I'm wondering what to expect

I think that the screensaver used 1 proc for graphics and 1 for crunching. CLI is 2 doing pure crunching.
Keep in mind however that you are still sharing the same memory bandwith, so you won't get double performace. It's probably 1.7 to 1.8 times faster with 2 CLI then 1. So you will probably do 1.8 times what you were doing with the screensaver.
If you are using the team seti proxy, you can check your times for the clients.

Just run 2 instances of the CLI version.
Also, a few years ago means a different seti version. This new one crunches twice as much data.

OK I tried to run two versions of it, and it gave me a message about needing to be in a different directory, so I made a copy of the CLI client but it gave me the same message when I tried to run two, even from difference directories. Am I missing something? Also, when you quit the terminal, Seti goes with it. Dnet used to stay open when you quit, it would always run :-D How can I make Seti stay open when I quit the term?

First, Make sure you have setup both clients so they already have their username.
#!/bin/sh
cd /Users/scott/seti1; ./setiathome -proxy seti.macnn.com:5517
cd /Users/scott/seti2; ./setiathome -proxy seti.macnn.com:5517
Copy the above into a text file, edit the paths so that they point to your two seti directories, and save it somwhere easy to get to.
Open Terminal.app and go to where you saved that file.
type in 'chmod +x <scriptname>'
then type in './<scriptname> &'
There, it's now running using both processors, started from one command.

SETI Dockling gives you some GUI control over the SETI CLI client, and it'll start/stop/manage 2 instances. It'll show progress as well, without having to run -verbose.
Pretty nifty little app. My dual gig is now turnin 2 W/U's every 7 hours or so.

Well 2 WU's later, I'm done. I just don't like seti, i feel like its wasting my idle time, not using it. I have switched to D2OL until RC5 starts up again. Hey maybe I can find the cure for ebola. And they say its Altivec aware. It has a pretty good stats page. So what the hell... And I even joined Team MacNN. I'd like to see a D2OL page on the team Macnn web site, soon, before I switch away from it forever.

Yeah but I don't really like the team page as a whole, if I started writing, you'd have a whole new team web site by the time I was done, and I really don't wanna get into ANOTHER web site right now, I'm busy enough as it is ya know?
