How long does it take to process one unit on your machines? I just want to see an estimation to see how mine compares.

When I had nothing running, my computer was able to do one under six hours (using OS X 10.2.2). One time I left tons of things on and it almost hit ten hours.

G4 350. SETI averages 15 hours per work unit on a mostly unloaded system.

Impressive! What kind of cache does it have? My power mac 800 G4 takes around 10-11 hours, CLI version. Of course it only has a 256k L2 cache and no L3 cache. I understand that slows it down a lot and that the Macs with at least 1 meg L3 cache do much better. My ibook 600 G3 runs from 14-16 hours. Again, I suspect the small L2 cache and slower mobo handicaps it, that plus it is my most used box for other things.

Thinking about one of those dual G4 upgrades from PowerLogix for the PM800, but undecided. Think I will wait to see what MacWorld or shortly after brings first, and then decide if I am going to upgrade any of my boxes.

1 MB L2 at 175MHz. The system is not quite as stable if I clock the L2 up to 233, so it stays at 175. I have not seriously benched it in a while, it could be more than 15 ... 15 seems about right for 24/7 crunching, subtracting time for UT and stats development, leaving 1 unit per day avg.

That sounds about right, based upon what I have been reading. Seti needs about 1 MB of ready memory access for instructions, to perform at its best. For computers with fast RAM access, that is no problem, but due to the Macs memory bottleneck, at least 1 meg of L3 cache is needed for SETI to really run well. You are getting some really good times from your 350 and are matching my iBook 600 with small cache.

An interesting new SETI Article at the Planetary Society about the upcoming recheck of the 100 most promising candidates from Seti@Home.

I'm on a Dual 1.0 GHz G4 (MDD) and some quick figurin' says it takes about 6.5 hrs. per work unit per CPU. That's about 7.4 WU's per day.

-Jeff

PS - I think my D2OL days are over, at least for a while - I've moved all my CPUs over to SETI.

I was wondering what a dual 1 ghz would do. Thanks! I am considering the idea of getting a PowerLogix upgrade for my single 800 and the dual 1 gig is one of the options I am considering. It will be next year though before I decide. I heard they may be releasing a dual 1.25 early in the year. My other option is to upgrade my Athlon's. Decisions, decisions....

I've noticed that you happen to be right on my @ss these last few days... ahem.

It's the Duel of the Duals. What else are you running? I've got 2 G4 450's and a 150, but it looks like you're gonna catch me in about a week.

Yeah, I'm slowly creeping up on you Here's what I'm bringing to the table:
At home I've got:
- A Dual 1GHz G4
- A G4/450 (but not for long... just sold it on eBay)
- A Powerbook 1400 w/G3 upgrade (I think I get about 1 WU per week outta that one )
- A G3/266
At work I'm running
- A P3/???MHz PeeCee
- An HP B2000 CAD station (though i'm not sure of the stability of the internet connection)

So, it seems like you're doin' pretty good for three machines. Seems like I should be doing quite a bit more than you given the horsepower devoted to SETI, but I think the Dual G4 so overpowers the other machines that they're just drops in the bucket. I suppose I'll have to benchmark them some day and see what they're capable of. I'll report back on that one.

I've got a couple of older PCs at home I could fire up as well, but they won't contribute very much. I guess every little bit helps though.

Take Care,

-Jeff

OK, I'm editing this message to add some new info... writing the above message made we want to check the other machines that were running. Turns out the G3/266 didn't have an ethernet cable plugged in, and had been trying to connect to the SETI server since the 12th The Powerbook had its lid closed, and for the last couple months I've been running it I assumed that it was still working when the lid was closed. BZZZZT - Wrong! It's done maybe an hour's worth of work over the last couple months. Sheesh. Well, aside from being an idiot, I should have slightly elevated WU numbers during the next week. I wonder what else I've done...

Arrghh, you passed me last night! It pretty much is the two dualies dueling it out, but now that you figured out two of your machines weren't working, I'm probably toast... Wish I could talk the front office folks into letting me run on their Hells, but I've got a super paranoid bookkeeper who thinks SETI is a trojan horse, and that someone's going to "get in" to her machine via a work unit, and steal all our records. I've pointed out that out of 4 million users, that has yet to happen, but still...

Oh well, good crunching!
