Does anyone have a problem with me making a page, on my own website, that has a few of those affiliate links where you click on them and buy stuff at a website like amazon.com, and posting it here?
It would be to help cover the costs of the servers (stats and proxies) and nothing else.
I'd rather not ask for money, but it does cost to keep the servers up, and I've decided to leave my job to concentrate on school. Incase you are wondering why they are at my house and not hosted by macnn, it is because the stats that reader50 and I wanted to offer were deemed to be too taxing to the servers for macnn to host them. I didn't want them toned down, so I am hosting them.
Now there will never be banners or popups on the team pages, so I thought this would be ok, but I want to ask first. I was thinking of doing amazon.com and crucial, which are both places that many of us already shop at. It costs you nothing, you just click on the link and buy normally.

Again, I'd like to know people's opinions of this before I even set it up.

Thanks,

Scott

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

Or in other words the bills got to be paid somehow, so I have no problem with it, if it helps to keep the team going.

I'd try to click through a link when I needed to buy something. I do that anyway with MacNN ads if I need hardawre or something. I don't order books online too often, but I'd use it when I could.

Hook me up, I buy books, and ram from both places often. I'd be glad to help the cause out. Hell if you put a paypal donation link on there i'd be glad to throw in a couple bucks, i got to school(17 credits next semester) and work 2 jobs so i feel your pain. I defently dont want to see team macnn go down.

No. I won't let anyone just give me money.

Looks like no one has a problem with it, so I'll setup the affiliates in the next few days.
Thanks for the support.

Why not just give you money, the govt seems to think they need free money so badly, 1% tax increase in the county over bringing total tax up to 7%. I'd rather see free money go to a good cause, and donations are a tax deduction tee hee.

Anyone happen to know if the affiliation benefit is still applied if I click through to an international site (UK)?

I want to support the Team, but it only makes sense for me to order from UK sites. Unless I'm ordering region 1 DVDs. Hmmm...

By the way Scott, I would also be happy to contribute a few dollars via PayPal or whatever, but I appreciate and respect your position on not wanting to go down that route.

Just try and click through. I'll poke around their docs and see what I can find out.

Edit: It doesn't say anything about international sites. I guess just click the link, then click the links to get to the international site and buy there.

Edit2: Wow, I said a few days and it took over a month. I'm slow!

Edit3: Are there any other sites that people buy from often that have affiliate programs that you would like me to sign up for? I don't want to make a big page of links, but 4 or 5 seems fine.

By the way, if you notice above, I changed the link to a more permanent one.

Why not some more mac online stores, or just any online store. It need not be cheap like some other sites, that are covered with tons of links. How about MacMall, OWC, buy.com, etc.

Like you said the main pages won't have ads, so what will it matter if this page has a lot of ads. So long as they are usefull now one will mind.

Edit: Oops saw all too late that scott's edit 3 already mentions more affiliates.

Point me to places that people will use that do have affiliate programs (not just banner ad things) and I'll sign up for those.
But I don't want a huge list of places, I'm just going for some top used ones here.
