the NEW client 3.24 final for folding@home is out. I would encourage all F@H'rs to update as soon as convenient. It is available from the normal download page and has some nice enahancements.

Now once my vacation is over and I can get back home, maybe I can get the boxes that were knocked out they the Puget Sound power outage, back on line. Yeah, yeah I know, I need to get some bigger UPS's.

I've just started looking into this, as SETI and RC5-72 seem a little pointless by comparison, and I'd like to donate processor cycles to some worthwile cause.

How long does this thing usually take to process a work unit? I've been testing it for 30 minutes or so, and it's displaying progress as %0.0 the whole time.

unitinfo.txt:

Current Work Unit
-----------------
Name: p207
Download time: January 1 16:27:35
Progress: 0% [__________]

G4 450

Is the CLI version at all faster than the GUI?

The CLI is not noticiably faster then the GUI, as long as the GUI is ran hidden (Command H). Do not run the GUI with the screen displayed or minimized to the task bar. That really slows it down. Running the GUI hidden provides the convenience of being able to display it (Command D) periodically to check progress. Otherwise with the CLI, you must check the stat.sah file to check your progress.

A P207 is 7.6 points. It will take my Power Mac 800 just about 2 days, and my iBook 600 a little over 2.5 days. Check out this thread: http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=1907 in the F@H forums for some good benchmark info on the Mac. These are based on the Tinker core.

Bad news is that Gromacs core has seen some more development (bug) delays. Gromacs can utilize Altivec, SSE and 3Dnow to speed up the work and on the Mac G4's do very well. The good news is that it has been delayed for all platforms, but once released, Macs running Gromacs cores will have a competitive edge on those specific cores, which will help make up for their disadvantage on the Tinker cores.

This is a project that requires a lot of patience, but has the potential to do a lot of good and has already turned in some promising results. Personally I am waiting for SETI II AstroPulse and Southern Hemisphere to kick off, but in the meantime am crunching F@H.

Once they get the gromacs cores fixed up, I'm going to run it again.
