Do some Fold units take longer than others? I ask this because my G4 733 which is on 24/7 is only 84% through and it has been running the unit for 2.5 days. In contrast my iMac 800 is catching it (75% after 1.5 days).

I'm running the GUI version hidden.

Being new to FOH I'm not sure if these times are OK.

Fold units vary in time, and they give different amounts of credit to make up for that.

All Fold units are benched by the project on a PII 400. The Stats Units awarded are the number of days required to finish. IE: if a unit takes 6.2 days to finish on that box, you will get 6.2 stats units for it. This is the reason why Folding awards fractional stats units, I'm not aware of any other project that gives fractions.

So units take uncertain amounts of time, but a crunching box should produce the same amount of credit over the course of a week or so.

This link will give you an idea of points awared for current active proteins, and their deadlines. Your only real concern is that you return the unit within the deadline from when you start it. Cruching 24/7, you won't have any problems though.

http://folding.stanford.edu/psummary.html

Wow, just noticed they have released some new 600 series proteins. They are monsters. Deadline is 14 days but they award 19.7 points and I've got 2 of them crunching on my Athlon 1900's. Looks like about 19.4 hours apiece.

As an example, a P203 will take my PM 800 just under 2 days, and a 2.5-3 days for my iBook 600. Point value is 7.6 The macs perform a bit differently on other proteins. For instance I find that I get better performance on the 200 series, then the 600 series, but there are a few exceptions there even. I got some of my worst point performance on the 160 series, although they were easy to complete in a day. Some folks like the faster proteins, but generally I find the bigger ones provide greater overall daily point averages. Patience pays with this project.

Thanks Shaktai, one of my machines finally finished - it yielded 7.9 points so was a reasonable size - so finally I have contributed to the team effort! Should be getting some extra horsepower soon - a couple of ddr thoroughbred athlon nforce 2 machines. Should be interesting to see how they perform.

Ah oh! Sounds like I am going to have to be keeping my eye on you too.

Congrats on that first protein. It is a good start. Guessing that one took about 2-2.5 days.

Hehe, 2 initially, using XP1700's with the thoroughbred 'b' core so should be good for overclocking (they are the XP2400 cores, apparently) - so yes, they will be clocked!

OS - I'm not much good with configuring PC os's so just running stock XP Pro. 2 x 256mb matched pairs of cl2 2100 ddr memory to take advantage of the interleaving on the nforce2 board - I think thats what it's called! (I'm saving for the faster ram when I get the 333 fsb procs (won't be for a few months!).

The first going 24/7 will be a shuttle sn41g2, probably next Wednesday, although the EPOX 8RDA may be churning a bit this weekend!

Should have a better idea of how the XP1700 overclocks this weekend. Play time!

Hopefully you'll get Tbred Bs, not As.

Unless the interleaving gives you more bandwidth and you can clock the FSB different from the memory bandwidth, I'd be using DDR2700.
If you are getting Tbred Bs, they will probably clock to a 166FSB if not higher, just with FSB overclocking. I doubt your ram can get that high, however. Good luck. You can probably get those xp 1700s to 1700+MHz.

yeah, I agree, I intend to go 2700 ram when the cash comes in Looking forward to what I can get from the 1700xp's. They should be fine until I can afford the decent Ram and the faster Tbreds. Thankfully they are Bs and not As.

Will let you know how the overclocking goes!

My XP1800 1725MHz running linux and the windows client got one of the giant ones, it's looking like it'll take around 20-22 hours to finish it.
My XP1800 stock running windows 2k is also running one, but it's windows, and so it's a pain to quickly check it.

I hope my fast boxes get big ones.
Mac version isn't verbose, so no idea what it's doing.

My personal experience is i get about 8 points a day w/ my Duron 850@912 running Win2k.

It really depends on if i can keep it running 24/7 as I dont have broadband, I have to manually connect each day.

Hope y'all don't mind a pup posting a little every now and then...

Any advice/knowledge is welcome!

When you say 8 points a day do you mean an 8 point WU or 8 WU's a day? Please say you mean an 8 point WU!

I finish one WU worth about 7.6 pts / day.. (about 22 hrs actually)

I wish i was finishing 8 WU's per day... That would be really nice.
