http://teamtest.the-depths-of-hell.c...g/public_html/

Post any comments you have, suggestions, bugs, either general or browser specific.
We hope to go live next weekend assuming no problems.

Feel free to register, it is required to vote in polls and probably a few other things, and it will become more important later on.

Also, we will be needing news posters, so if you would like that job, post in here. Please say what project you would like to cover. More then one is ok.

Special thanks to krove for all his hard work making this site, and putting up with me

The link worked fine for me. It is looking pretty good. I think that I might be able to help with news posting as well.

1. An updated Join MacNN page. We could lose the Genome@Home link and add D2OL and DFold.

2. Add D2OL as another section

Thats all I got for now. Looks good. Works in Safari.

reader50 found the site controls for the test pages.

reader50 should be working on the RC5 parser. Instead, reader50 has been up to no good.

Okay, I tried to post a story under SETI@Home and it while it let me write and preview the story, it gave me this message when I tried to save it.

Access Denied. Sorry, you do not have access to the story administration page. Please note that all attempts to access unauthorized features are logged
Also, I learned that in order to format a story, you must use html commands. I know just enough html to be dangerous. Guess I will have brush up on my skills, like how to post a link.

I'll have to have krove poke at it tomorrow.

You shouldn't need html...
I think you need to set it to plain text instead of html in Post Mode.

Suggestion: It appears as though the stories go from oldest to newest on the main page. Any way to get this to go from newest to oldest, like most news sites do? I didn't see a user preference for this.

It does put newest at the top. However, "Featured Stories" are like stickies, they appear above normal postings.

Posting permissions fixed. For the moment, they are pretty loose, you can post a story in any section.

Tips for posting stories:

1. Choose a proper category.
2. Choose whether to display on front page or only under specific topic / section.
3. Set the Post Mode as Plain Text. As admins, unfortunately, it defaults to HTML every time, so just remember to switch it.
4. Do not alter permissions settings. Leaving them as default will garantee no problems.

Wow, this is really starting to turn into something cool. Anyone who hasn't checked it out should. We got stories, we got polls and we got news. We even got a few wisecrackers. And just so you don't have to look up the URL...

I have topic icons up, with the exception of Übero. Unfortunately, Übero has absolutely no graphics on their project web site, so I need some submissions.

All you need to send me is the graphic, and I will format it correctly with the text in my photoshop template. The graphic should not be text, as I am looking for an image or representation of some sort to represent Übero. Send them to krove (at) pyramid (dot) net or post them to this thread.

For us news posters, is there any way to make plain text parse urls so that they become hyperlinks?

Also, can you shrink the images down to 96X96 or smaller? They are disproportionately large right now.

Are we going to have the site html validate?

There is no html validation mechanism or url parsing code in place.

I tried to post this last night, but the forums were acting up again...

I downloaded several browsers last night to try to duplicate Scott's display issue. The test site works fine as far as I can tell with freshly downloaded copies with no cache on the following browsers:

Internet Explorer 5.2.2
Chimera (Nightly as of 2-2-2003)
Safari v52
OmniWeb 4.1.1
OmniWeb 4.2b1
Mozilla 1.2.1
Mozilla 1.3b

I suggest emptying the cache / history. Again, the various browsers above I installed fresh on an iMac for the first time and ran them individually and saw no missing center on the blocks. That image is defined in CSS as a background image in the table cell. Mozilla certainly should have no problems displaying this. OmniWeb also has no issues displaying background images in table cells as defined through CSS.

Post more pictures and browser names, versions and platform if you still have issues.

Some display oddities:

IE select buttons - surrounding squares (IE OSX 5.2.1)

Looks like an IE issue. I don't use IE normally, but I'd guess it does this to all select buttons. Probably nothing the web designer could do other than post a tag "best viewed with a browser other than IE"

superscript problem (IEX 5.2.1, Chimera 0.6, Mozilla X 1.1)

This is probably a browser issue too. iCab does not even try to superscript it, just displays plain "D2OL" which looks fine. But it looks weird in other browsers. Maybe we have to avoid superscript outside of graphics?

Opera - title problem (Opera 6 Final OSX)

Note the title text got printed in the web page rather than the title bar. Not sure what caused this, the HTML looks fine to me. But Opera displays all current site pages with correct titles ... maybe it wants the title declaration to come sooner in the head code.

I guess other browsers just can't meet Safari or OmniWeb's superior display of unicode text (the superscript 2). I didn't format it as superscript, but rather it is simply a Unicode character. I was just curious how browsers would handle it.

From my testing, Mozilla 1.2.1+, Safari and OmniWeb handle it fine. I don't plan on using it any more, so...

As for the weird title in Opera, I'll have to switch the order of some of the header and ask you to see if it still displays as text above. Odd.

Those white backgrounds on the radio buttons in Internet Explorer are unique to the browser, not the test site. Just another reason why IE on the Mac sucks. For all those out there still hanging onto IE: get Safari!

All of our active stats sections have been ported to teamstats. I'm in the process of moving the old Ranks pages to teamstats, and fixing QuickStats bars for the existing team site.

Once those steps are completed, all stats will be turned off on team.macnn.com except the QS bars, and revised QS bar files will be sent to krove.

After that, krove will be able to finish his file work and we can contact the MacNN higherups to arrange the site conversion.

I have been super busy with work and school of late, so I have been putting off the site. There are some minor modifications I want to make to the html template to make it look better, etc.

Fortunately, I completed a great deal of the site during winter break. This semester is almost over (couple more weeks), so then I'll have time to finish my end of it.

The new team site is powered by Geeklog, an open-source web portal suitable for news and many other site types. Geeklog is a PHP application that uses MySQL as a backend database. krove has heavily customized our version to make it look MacNN-ish, and to eliminate any rendering issues in Mac browsers.

The new team stats site is a custom PHP monster written just for stats, using a MySQL backend database. Currently closed-source.

We're back up and almost ready to go live. Please report new problems with browsers, etc. (I re-did all the HTML to make it XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant.)

We also have a new version of geeklog with some nice little enhancements.

Sorry, my fault really. I didn't properly setup the directory structure to hide sensitive portions from the public. All fixed now. I knew this should have been done, but as a test site, I didn't think it all that important. Naïve on my part thinking that no one would really notice or care for the time being.

Hopefully we'll be back up before we know it!
