Well, it has been a long haul, but I should be the first MacNN'r to break 5000 points in Folding@Home tomorrow. Low production today, but a big dump tomorrow. If I hadn't had so many problems with my Athlon 2200, I might have broken it today.

That box is down again. Looks like it is the CPU after all is said and done. Been running too hot for too long. The fan I had wasn't up to snuff, but I didn't know it. Well live and learn I guess. Just makes me appreciate my Macs all the more.

YOU FRIED A 2200???

Ouch.
That must have cost you a few pennies back when you got it. It's still an expensive chip today.
Good luck on rebuilding though, otherwise you won't be first to 10K

BTW, congrats.

Good news! I didn't fry the 2200 but almost. It burnt some dust though that had accumulated on the heat sink. (nasty smell). Got it back up and working with a slightly better fan and heatsink, but too close for comfort. Still running hotter then I like.

Better cooler is on order (Scott I am taking your recomendation, even though I don't plan to overclock it.) Whew!!!!!!

Don't forget the good thermal paste.
The stuff on the HSF is ok, but arctic silver is better. However, if you are worried about applying it, just use what's on the HSF.
It's not the best HSF, but it works, and it's pretty good for $15.

BTW, what temps were you getting under load?

Well this morning I was shocked to find it running about 45c, then I noticed that it also seemed to be a little slow on frame times. When I reset the bios I forgot to reset the processor speed, and it was running at about 1388 mhz, instead of 1800. Set the bios so it recognized it as a 2200 and the temperature jumped to about 60-65c under full load. I have a Volcano 7 sink and fan I will install tonight. Also beefing up the fan on my one 1900 which is running a bit hot, and adding a box fan. Hopefully the combination will bring things back under control. The third Athlon box, a 1900 stays right around 45c under load all the time.

Looks like it will be nearly midnight Pacific time before I break 5000, due to having two boxes down for a few hours last night.

Okay, I am at 4976.81 right now on the Standford site, and barring any more disasters, should dump another 55.5 points at about 23:15 Pacific time to take me over the 5000 mark. Almost didn't make it due to computer issues. -- Speaking of which, I have a couple of cooling fans to install before I do cook a CPU.

Congratulations!

I'll be up with you in a month or so. My production has slowed a bit because I can't watch my work machines and keep them running 24x7 (co-workers have a bad habit of shutting them off). Needless to say, most of my production now occurs on an 8-5 workday schedule.

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output
