I have some irreconcilable differences with one of the higher ups at macnn. As a result, I am seriously thinking of leaving macnn over it. This will include the team. Now, I have 3 choices that I see here.
1) I quit DC altogether. I could do this, but I like doing DC. It's a fun hobby.
2) I join up with another team, which would probably be Free-DC.
3) I create a new Mac team not affiliated with any website, and we hope to get members from all sites. I'd like to do this, but I do not want to make a team of myself and 3 or 4 others. Of course, I can't do this without both krove and reader50, and of course all of you, the team members.
#3 is what this poll is about. I don't want to create another little team, so please let me know what you think.
Will I leave for sure? I don't know yet. But I have privately thought about it for a while, and tensions between me and this other person have flared again, and frankly, I don't want to work with or be associated with this person anymore.
Thank you for your time.

Frankly having already gone the "create a team" route, I really can't recommend it. I for one will stay with MacNN as long as it is fun. If I every left, it would likely be to one of other existing Mac teams. But creating another team? No way, even though I do have the resources to do it.

Having had problems with higher ups in other things, I recommend removing yourself from the stressful position for a while or permanently. I like what we have here and I'd hate to see it go because of a single individual. As a team, I'm sure we could help you out. Someone else might be able to deal with the macnn people (freeing up you to scrape up more resources to crunch for us) or handle other team responsibilities. Just seems a little less drastic an option.
On another note, if we could create the All Encompassing Uber-Mac team this would be our chance...

I have to agree with Jarling, it would be a shame if you did move on (you are a great motivator and ambassador for the team).
I think the only thing that would prompt me to leave Team MacNN would be if the BIG mac team was created.
Try and stay Scott, obviously the rest of us do not know how bad things are, but if you can rise above it you are the one who will gain.

I agree with DAlex.
Stay if you can, if you are gonna go for a huge mac team and try and get all the other mac teams to join in, then hell yeah Im there.

Guys, this poll is all about whether or not you would join a big mac team if Scott were to go out and create it.
I, for one, definitely would.
Team Mac, anyone?

If there was to be a new Mac centric team that was a merger of other teams, then that would be a different story.
Need a plan to make it happen though. To draw other players, you need to have your act together up front. Can't go about it in a haphazard manner. Personally I think the best thing would be to try to reconcile or work within the framework we already have. It would be a lot of work to build a new framework. (website, forums, method of drawing users, etc.)

I agree with Shaktai, if we want to do this, we need a plan.
We need to discuss it with all the other mac teams to give each group a sense of ownership. We cant create a team and expect everyone to join it afterwards (thats why we have so many mac teams). Of course the added benefit of that is that there becomes a greater pool of workers for creating websites and such that Shaktai is worried about.
We would also have to decide what from each team will be moved to the Uber Mac team (we have the best stats, someone else might have the best website, another the best forum...). It may change the feel of the team. We will be the best team around, but there may be dissenters, splinter groups, and not a little infighting to deal with.
It should be noted that this will work best only on the projects that allow you to take your units with you.
Finally, an added benefit of all of the added manpower would allow us to join in projects that otherwise we would be spread out too thin to join. (Evo@Home comes to mind). Besides, if the Uber Mac team doesnt have the capacity for every project for the mac platform, wheres the incentive for other projects to port them over).
In short, I would be psyched to do this, but I realize its going to take A LOT of legwork.

I agree that it won't work as well for projects such as Folding@Home, but, with Team Mac, I don't think it would take very long to surpass all of the current Mac teams.

I'd agree with the comments on the planning. If it was a merged team then I would be willing to make the move, even if it meant losing all my folding stats. It's not like the folding project would just up and lose all my work. I'd just lose credit for it On the other hand, if it wasn't a merged team I can't see myself moving. Blame reader50 for his awesome stats

Scott is the one who motivated me to join team macnn and leave team macaddict. I for one would stick with him if he were to leave.

scotty???? damn whenever i take a little break from macnn all this crazy stuff happens. As some other people have said, i urge you to stay if at all possible, you are a great motivator for this team and without you it wouldnt be the same. I also urge you not to create another team. I know you still value this team, and im sure you know if you create another team it will weaken this one. I hope everything turns out alright. -john

Scott, although it seems like things are irreconcilable between you folks, things are rarely completely hopeless...
Try taking a couple steps back for a couple weeks... it'll let you get a breather, and maybe a different perspective on things perhaps your path will be clear to you.
Switching teams is an annoyance in Folding@home because you don't take your work with you, at least it's not deleted... You simply get to start back at 0 again...
The UberMac team is a great concept and I don't think any other group could pull it off, except the Mac community is a fairly tight knit group to begin with...
And of course if you simply need a change of scenery... well... drop by our forums and hang out a little, it's kinda enteretaining sometimes...

If it was an effort to create a merged team from different Mac teams I might leave MacNN...
I still don't understand why people stick to SETI teams like Team OGrady that have no stats and no real activity. And I am not sure that team MacNN is strong enough to federate other teams. But a new team with that goal not affiliated with any mac news site might work.
One big federated team could also defend mac interests better, like making sure new clients are getting optimized for Altivec.

I would argue with Toast that we wouldnt be starting at 0. Rather, we would be starting at the level of the #1 mac team. I am assuming that they would be onboard (or else why would we go through the trouble). They could change their name to whatever us Mac Teams would call ourselves and we would just add to their previous work.

I haven't contributed much this past 6 months, (some would say ever!) as I have had quite a few issues other than Macs to deal with, but I would be in for an Uber Mac team...
Peace,
Marc

DC stand for Distributed Computing. Read about what it is here.

Folding@Home and SETI@Home are both very different Distributed Computing projects.
If you aren't already signed up, you should check out the Team site and consider joining Team MacNN! We would love having you around.

Well, i haven't been active since January when my iMac crapped out. Hopefully, i'll be back online sometime next week with a brand new 800MHz iBook.
I'd be willing to go to another team. Scott and Reader have been amazing leaders/troubleshooters/ and motivaters.
I just suggest that if it comes to pass, we don't spread out to far to fast like we did hear. maybe just SETI and Folding. SETI units will transfer boosting the team up the ranks quickly. Folding would start from scratch though. But hey, i love a good challenge and i think it would motivate us more starting from scratch.
here's hoping for Team Apple Computer!

I stick with this team only because I LOVE the stats pages. If you guys own the code to them and take them to a new team, I will follow. I have been quietly going to other teams forums and trying to recruit for a LARGE Mac team, with NO positive results at all. Pretty disappointing!
I would be willing to work to help start a new Mac team so that we could show better in the overall team rankings. Let me know what I can do to help!
