This is this new distributed project called operation project X. The point of the project is to crack the code on the xbox so that linux can run on it. The winner recieves $100,000.

The problem is it is not available for the mac. They are looking for anyone who wants to port it over. The source code is available at operationprojectx.com

If anyone wants to port, please do so. I would love to but well my understanding of coding sucks.

You are welcome to participate on your own, but team macnn will have no involvement with this.

First, it's a random luck run trying to break RC2048.
Next, it's illegal under the DMCA (do not start a DMCA discussion here).
Finally, it's just dumb. If you want linux on a console so badly, go buy a playstation 2.

Would I have to buy an Xbox for this? M$ is not getting $200 from me.

The project is trying to crack the RSA-2048-bit key for Xbox access. This is equivalent to an RC5-2048 challenge. If RC5-72 is going to keep us busy for a few years ... 2048-bit is not going to be cracked by brute-force before the Star Trek century. If then.

But who would want to run Linux on an Xbox anyway? Running Linux is for not giving $ to M$. You can buy a Winbox and give M$ their due ... or you can buy an Xbox and give M$ even more ... or you could buy a Mac / assemble a normal Linux box ... and not give M$ a dime.

I no longer see why people want to run Linux on an Xbox. When it first came out, the Xbox was a great deal, as far as computing specs and price go. But now you can find some good deals, and build a similar if not better linux box, for about $200. Even the linux kit for PS2 isn't a great deal, the console and the kit together cost $400, and you'd need to re-compile everything you'd want to install on it. The only advantage to the PS2 linux kit, is that you game do some game developement.

Just buying a cheap PC is better then linux on consoles for computing purposes.
