Okay, I've only installed D2OL a few days ago, so I know absolutely zip about this puppy.

I see form the posts that most people are trying to get the GUI to go away.

What I'd like to know is how you get it to appear!

The only time it did was on the initial launch and at that time it got stuck trying to load a target. After waiting for a rather extended period of time with no activity I quit the program.

Since then it has never brought up the GUI.
I'd kind of like to check out exactly what appears and whether there's any controls over how soon it starts using cycles.

Using top in the terminal show me the Gridwin.exe, D2OL and java all kick in if I launch the app and it appears as if Gridwin is grabbing nearly all the cycles on the machine almost immediately after launch (I could swear it's supposed to use 'spare' cycles!).

Any insight into this can of worms would be appreciated.

First, just quitting the client doens't quit the processes most of the time. A very annoying problem they have never fixed. You may have to use Process Viewer or the terminal to quit them. Once fully quit, then restarting will bring back up the GUI agent on restart, but only the first time. The actual client won't show in the dock. (Seems to only happen under Jaguar)

mikkyo (another MacNN'r) found a fix for this and gave detailed instructions in the D2OL forum Mac Client threads. They still haven't fixed it however. Their system is so bogged down right now, that I can't get to it to look up the thread. Once you implement his fix, then the client will show in the dock that it is running, and you can start or stop the GUI agen at will from the client menu. The fix is easy, but necessary for anyone running Jaguar.

Right now, that project is completely bogged down, due to the number of folks who suddently jumped on the bandwagon due to SARS. Fixes are supposed to be on the way, and started yesterday, but weren't completed.

Yeah, I've been killing the processes in the terminal but the gui still hasn't come back for me. I've been able to get into the d2ol forum's but when I did a search for mikkyo it didn't come up, (I had seen mention of his fix there but not his actual post ).
thanks for the reply!

I recall mikkyo's Jaguar solution post over there. It was at least six months back.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to get into the D2OL forums for the last few days, or I'd search up a link.

Note that I have not even tried D2OL under the latest java release (1.4.1).
So I have no idea if there are any issues or improvements.

Many thanks reader50 for dredging up the posts from mikkyo and to mikkyo for taking the time to trailblaze the inner workings of this app!

Now I can bang my head on this thing and see whether I can get it to behave! (I've yet to see an icon in the dock since it's initial launch*).

[I know.. I'll just reformat the drive, re-install jaguar.... j/k!]

Nope, the latest java makes no difference. They are supposed to be working on new clients for all the platforms to fix some of the ongoing problems, and the Rothschild Institute is now also running the D2OL project, as well as TSC. A lot of upgrades are taking place, but it is a bit of a mess right now, especially with the sudden surge of folks wanting to work on SARS.
