Got a couple of curiosity questions:

? How many units of Ubero work could I expect a PowerMac 1.42 GHz dual G4 to crank out over 24 hours running dedicated?

? Is the JAVA code in any way optimized for the Altivec engine? Is that even possible?

? If not, are the Ubero guys open to someone writing a native client for their stuff? If that is even possible since you don't know what project you'll be doing and thus what problem code will be needed.

Don't do ubero.

It's quite dead.

Edit: It appears that the team's current projects of choice are folding@home and distributed folding. folding@home is altivec optimized, btw.

1. Units per day from a dual 1.4: 600-700? Others may have a better guess.

2. Altivec: no. It seems to be possible - D2OL is also Java, and has a vecmath library.

3. Altivec coding: Scott Hodson (founder of Ubero) seems to be the only guy who writes code for Ubero. Drop him a letter at scott(at)ubero.com, or post in the project forum.

Just posted late last night in the Ubero Forums. Time will tell. Maybe this time something will pan out. If so we may have to dust off some of those old optimizations.

There is a lot of activity at Ubero these days! We are working on new software and our first paying project. We will have an interim release that is more stable, supports Java 1.4, improved installer, more multi-project support, and some other features but still just runs UCIAlignment. After that, however, we will be launching previews of our first paying project.

We are also close to finalizing negotiations to work on another project that will be utilizing Ubero and distributed computing for a project like none other and, perhaps, will be somewhat controversial for some of you but will also bring many new members to the network.

Stay tuned over the next couple of months!

If they actually start a new project, especially a paying one, I'll be the first to start it, but until then, my previous statement stands.

I wonder how much they could be paying though. I doubt I'll be running any pay project that doesn't even pay for the equipment.

Sounds like he's talking a couple months down the road still. Worth keeping an eye on, but not getting too excited over yet.
