....to keep an eye on my remote machines - lost 5 days of production when we restarted the office servers and I forgot to restart FAH (note to self: use the startup folder....)

Not that my production is particularly outstanding at the mo' but all the same every bit helps.

Ouch!!

Total bummer. No wonder we haven't passed LWD

Oh well, at least you caught it. (note to self, check auto startup configs.)

Heh, should be adding a couple of new machines shortly - XP2100 and XP2000 - running 24/7 just for crunching.....

Still, could have done without losing 5 days of even small production (I've got a jbcool breathing down my neck )

Sorry DAlex but I believe that it is you that is breathing down my neck. You still have some time left to stay ahead of me. I should have couple more machine to drop in place to make this interesting.

Now that I have passed you I am going to need to pump things up a bit and go after enola. I think enola has friends helping again.

Have (7) motherboards, (12) drives headed this way. I'm sure Fry's will have some specials which will all me to add to the mix.

Netboot is the project for this weekend.

GEEZE JBCOOL
I didn't think those HDs would all be for you!

Looks like I'll be at #4 before long (I've decided not to get any new farm machines in the near future)

Side note: The team's production is really nice. I think in the next few days we'll start another f@h recruiting run, and see if we can't get us up to 5-7K/day sustained.

Why yes they are! I was surprised when they came today, with the motherboard, power cables. Small cheap hard drives are hard to come by and my stock was running low. Should have a couple running this weekend even if I don't get netboot running. See you soon enola.

I still don't think I can catch up with you even with all the machines running. Still supporting d-fold to stay in the top 100 rank. Can't even dream of being in the Mikkyo & Cobramac ballpark.

Still would like to keep the little white dogs on the run.

What systems did you buy, and how many?

I'm also using those drives to refresh my supply, but I offered a lower price, and it hasn't been accepted or rejected yet.

Good luck on getting the drives. Thanks for hooking me up.

I went ahead and got four Biostar M7VIG Pro motherboards since I have some 1900+ CPUs that came off of K7S5A motherboards that I burned up. Have three of the K7S5A boards as backups. Nothing like having a Fry's around. No overclocking, just have a bunch of old memory also.

I did order 1GB of Geil golden dragon memory last night so I can OC my A7N8X Deluxe motherboard.

Okay, I have an extra athlon 2200 and a good fan and heatsink. Any recommendations on a mobo, case, HD etc I could drop it in? Just something basic but easy to put online. Purely a dedicated cruncher.

Oh and cheap. Real Cheap. I am trying to save up for the day when 970's might be available in Macs. I need to upgrade my digital photo box.

Hey, quit picking on me!! Hehe. Geez, Fry's must love you!! I look forward to hearing about your netbooting experience. Maybe it will motivate me to get going with my farm. I just want to do one stupid node but lately I'm finding that after a full day messing with computers at work I don't feel like messing with them anymore when I get home. Good luck getting that stuff working.

For HD, look for my thread on cheap HDs. I've still got refurbs left.

Hi Shaktai, I've had loads of ECS K7S5A boards over the last couple of years - found them to be reliable and very cheap (about £27 in the UK). If you don't want to splash out for a vid card then the K(forgot the number)SOM by ECS is cheap with LAN, DDR, onboard graphics - Got one running 24/7 as a seti box for a mate at the mo' (got it for £28)

Just my recommends, they are nothing amazing, just solid and cheap

The cheapest cases I've found are usually by JNC (about £11 in the UK) - again, just simple cases but which don't have any exposed sharp edges to cut yourself on during building.

Looks like the team is going to get another boost - You, jbcool and myself slowly coming back up to speed.

Just a note for the new or returning f@h members.
If you have AMD systems, make sure you get the "beta" 3.25 client, and use the -forceasm switch as well as the -advmethods switch to enable SSE processing. Only don't use -forceasm if your machine locks up on you and it's caused by folding. It's a problem that affects only a few machines, but they conservatively shut off SSE unless you force it on.

Raven others may buy this but I have seen the power that you can bring to the table. It took me weeks to clean up all the dust as you went past me over at d-fold.

I'm just playing catch up.

Oh yes, Shaktai knows what I am talking about.

Me picking on you? Get real! I remember once when you picked me up, threw me down, kick me hard and left me in that ditch.

I need to figure out a way cheap way to store the boards.
That will probably take more time than setting up the netboot.
Gee I should be able to figure out something since I am a design engineer.

I understand about not wanting to look at a computer when you get home. Just got off of eight months of a 12hr/7days run.

If you add 7 systems to your farm you will be cranking along quite well enough to catch up to the top 5 with no problem.
Especially if they are all 1900 XP or better.
I've been too busy to do anything with any machines.

Where is the FAH 3.2.5Beta client at?

Nope just three this weekend, maybe if I have time.
Will probably move a couple machines back over to d-fold to try and get 2Mil+ per week. You are doing very good with the machines that you have.

Can't afford any more processors until after I buy some microphones that are on sale this weekend and go to the hamfest next weekend.
To many hobbies.

Got the motherboard thing figured out. PVC and tie straps. Cheap and easy to disassemble and pack when this job ends.

Thanks to all for you help and comments.

No more Mr. Nice guy, no more Mr. Clean. (Remember the song?)

Shaktai, enola enjoy your lead while you can. I just ordered one 2600+ 333, and two 2400+ cpu's. Frys is selling 2000+ with motherboards for $59 this weekend and I'm getting one of those.

Motherboard rack gets built tomorrow, netboot server gets configured on Sunday. Full production scheduled for next Friday.

I tried to be nice but what did you do? Just walked right over me.

Let the games begin. May the best ME win.

Psst! You think they will take the bait???

Come one DAlex follow in my wake.

I'm having a hard time envisioning what this looks like. Is it a flat sheet of PVC that you drill holes into to mount the hardware with the tie straps? I'd be interested in a picture when you get it finished.

Oh, I'd love to but...my shuttle has been crashing/BSOD hard all day - just getting it repaired (yep XP was to blame ) - still it does now have an XP2600 in it (courtesy of a friend, a thank you for helping him move house! ).

The other machine due to come online is an xp1700 modded to 2000 but that one is playing ugly too at the mo'..... so it's just my G4 and P4 something or other - the G4 has been five days on a 70 pointer!

Sorry enola. I should have said PVC tubing. Set up two parallel rails and hang the boards vertically from them with the tie straps.
Thought about a wire shelf also that way you could hang the motherboards below the shelf and put the power supplies on the shelf above the borads. Just need to be creative with this stuff. I goofed off today after work and didn't get anything done.

DAlex moving houses now? Remind me not to pick on you, I've never been that strong.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I've had nothing but good luck with XP and Mandrake 9.1, only burned up one processor and two motherboards in the last nine months so I have been pretty lucky.

Shaktai I may have you post the pictures for me when I get everything built and running. Did you get a motherboard for your processor?

Well, I have a nice dump hitting sometime later today.
Bye Bye Shaktai.
Unfortunately, Raven will roll over you soon too, and then me as I still haven't found time to do much of anything. I'm actually one system down, due to generosity.

No problem with posting pictures. No new Mobo yet. I tried getting the 2200 working on one of my other 1900 boxes just to be safe, but got nothing but errors. CPU itself might be damaged. Besides too busy right now to put much time into it. Gonna be a crazy month ahead of me.

Well I'm making it easy for you. I have put everything over on dFold. A change in my job is going to keep me busy for a little while, and I constantly had to babysit a couple of my PC's on F@H with Gromacs. I know they will run steady on dFold without much problem so until the job situation settles down, it will be a better project for me.

I'm sad to see you leave FAH. It's been fun trying to chase you down. For a while there it felt like you were so far ahead of me I'd never catch up. I think you were the last person I had any hope of overtaking. Once I get bored over on FAH I'll join you with more than my current token presence on dFold.

Don't look behind you because I'm starting the ramp up to overtake you in F@H. This is due to the fact that you supplied the information that I needed to get the f@H netboot server up and running.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Naw, I ain't that mean.
I have everything figured out except geting it to write to a directory on the server instead of into the ram drive. Maybe welnic can give me some hints.

The windows installation was exactly as the document directed.
