Assuming the Mac client for DF comes out Tuesday, should we hit DF hard?

See topic.
Should we focus our efforts on DF for a while while it's fresh with it's stats reset, or should we continue our focus on f@h?

Been pondering the same thing myself. Macs are much more competitive at dFold then at Folding@home, and PC's are as competitive. Thing is though unless there is strong agreement on it, I think we would be better off staying with Folding@home.
Advantage is that we would be getting in on the start of Phase II so there wouldn't be the same battle of playing catch-up.
So far I haven't seen anything on the availability of a Mac Client yet. I did pose the question over in the dFold forums though.

During beta testing the question of an OSX client came up, and Howard said that the algorithm and the data format that was saved were the only things that were different, so he did not need to test any platforms other than linux and windows. They do have machines for all of the platforms that they have clients for. I am sure that there will be an OSX client right off for phase II, and I even think it will work.

I think only the people in f@h that are ahead of me should go over there.
Guys I am going to keep working the f@h 'cause there is a LWD (Little White Dog) that I want to kick around for a while.
As always the team members should work on the projects that they wish to contribute there cpu time.
Hey take it easy! You don't need to kick that soap box I'm on.

So have they actually changed dfold to take advantage of anything?
Like FPU, Altivec?
The old client is on par for all the platforms cause it is pretty much unoptimized and just uses CPU cycles and memory access to get its work done.
After the new client comes out someone should run CHUD tools on it and snapshot what it is doing and we can see if they even make floating point calls.
Last time, they didnt even use cache routines to speed things up.

Been thinking about it, and I may put my Macs over there for a bit. They only contribute about 15-17 points per day to F@H, so might do better at dFold relatively speaking. My Wintels I will leave on F@H for the time being unless I see something really dramatic with dFold.
Besides, maybe that way jbcool can catch me in under 6 months.

Ha Ha Ha! U R very funny guy shaktai. I thought the reason that your were moving your machines over was because you wanted an excuse for me being able to run over you.
I pulled all except two machines off of d-fold and noticed that I am able to match you on f@h project. Don't even have the netboot machines running yet. You go sit on the porch, I'll play in the yard, and we can both watch the BIG DOGS(Scotttheking, Mikkyo, Cobramac, and Raven) run around the neighborhood.

Bah, I made a bunch of posts before, and none appeared.
I have linux PPC working fine, but it won't work for me on OSX.
Anyone else having any errors like xterm errors?

The only trouble I have had with the OSX client is that it no longer recognizes the -s flag, so the machines that were using that just quit once they updated. But other than that no problems.

Odd, it didn't work via ssh, but it's working locally.
It still won't work in screen though.

I'm not exactly hitting it hard but I put the new client on two machines, the pc at work that can't do F@H and the iBook. I recently retired the iBook from F@H service because it was too painfully slow and I felt sorry for it. Maybe it can make a better contribution with dFold.
Are our dFold stats going to be reset as well?

I know better! I only have four old machines working on this. Two of them are 375 miles away so I just have to let them crunch, the machine I bought from you and this old junker that I use as the main computer. Anyway your the one that said you didn't like us being in 31st place. Geeze give me a break I'm just trying to help, DAD!
I'm king of the world, I'm king of the world. Until one of you big guns start shooting then I am heading for cover.
I loaded mandrake 9.1 on the one I got from you to put it working until I could work on the Debian. Couple of thinks it won't boot linux up unless it sees a ps2 keyborad. After that it boots up and runs fine with the usb stuff. F@H core dumps on it so I just let it work on d-fold.
Got netboot about 2/3 done, if I just take a day of work and quit helping everyone I can get it going. Got a nice surprise the motherboards I bought have PXE and I can over clock. Saved me from using the nic cards with the boot proms.

Yea, it's a girl! Congrats! You lucky man. Forget about the computers for a while, just try to get enough sleep.
And when you have time to put those big Dell boots on you may feel free to give that ole pedistal a that I am standing on a good swift kick.

Congrats Raven on the new family addition.
My news isn't nearly so exciting, but I have just taken on a new position at work. As a result I need a project that will run more reliably on my PC's without as much constant monitoring. (the new job will require more time and occasional travel).
Decided that dFold fits the bill so have moved all 6 boxes over to it. Just finished getting all the boxes configured for the new client including autostart in case of a power outage and of course it will keep working even if I lose my connection for a while. That ought to help the team out a little.
Gonna be real busy here for a while with the job transition, training, etc.

I'll see your 8 G and raise it a Fry's.
Bring it on big boy!
We are going to need the boost to move out of the #24 spot.
On another note:
It looks like it is going to cost about $175 for each netboot client.
Got (4) 2400+ machines waiting in reserve.
Don't forget you are the one that got me headed this direction.

Just could not stand seeing me in the #1 slot could you?

Funny that, my girfriend just gave birth to our baby boy last week... now I'm on paternity leave and I can't reach the *kof*borgedmachineswhereiwork*kof* to find out why they aren't running the updated dF client.
Darned inconsiderate of her, I say!

Hey Shaktai, you are next
I think I'm going driving soon, and at the other end of my trip is a farm
I'm going to try writing a news post for the macnn front page, hopefully you all can edit it so it can hopefully be posted tomorrow.
Edit: Or I'm going driving tomorrow

Umm! Okay! I'm not going to be trying to add anything more for a bit. Just going to pay off the credit card so that I can get one of those new 970 based PowerMacs to replace my aging PM 800 single.
I didn't figure my lead over you would last for long.

Yeah, those 970 machines look interesting. I'll be waiting for full specs and lots of details, myself.

Yeah! Sounds like we should hear something real soon. It would be great to have an excellent digital photography machine that also doubles as a 'kickin' cruncher. The 970's look real promising.
According to statsman, it looks like we have moved up to #20 in dFold, but we need to more then double our power to make the top 10 again. If you can get your farm going, that will go a long way towards that goal Of course I will have to sacrifice for the good of the team and let you pass me I guess.
Free DC and Ars Team Stir Fry are slugging it out for #1 but both of them have about 10 times our production. We finished up as #12 for Phase 1.
Edit: Just realized I wasn't running with the -qt switch on any of my boxes, and it was costing me from 15-25% of my CPU cycles because of terminal overhead.

I still haven't switched the secondary farm to f@h, or written the article, but I did get pretty far on a linux test server. Soon I shall build the real one, and it is currently speced to be a dual athlon mp 2600, although I'm hoping to make it dual 2800s (I'm not paying, it's for a company that I do the computer work for).
I'll pass Shaktai as soon as about 95 generations of buffered work dump I hope the DF server speeds up soon.

What a mess. And here I had just taken one processor from the dualie off of fah and onto dfold. The iBook and G4 can't upload which has become a widespread problem. But I'm more worried about the iBook as it's also getting "STATUS 910 MISSING PREVIOUS OR ILLEGAL GENERATION" in it's error.log. Fun. I'm going to wait until the upload issue has been resolved before giving up on the work buffered on the iBook.

I'm sick of this client, but I just don't feel like switching machines to other projects again.

Sheesh! No wonder I can't keep up with the big dog. They all have corporate sponsors.
Sound like I am going to have to work harder to figure out the farming thing. I thought that it was going to be an easy thing to set up. I told enola that is was riding a bike. What I should have said was to make sure you wear a helmet to protect your head when riding that bike. I'm beginning to think that I am brain dead from all the crashes I had this last weekend.
I'm going with the windows one until I figure out what the issue is with the linux server.
I should be able to be producing twice as much by this weekend. That is assuming that processors that got shipped to the wrong location make it here.
