Yo... how's it goin'?? I'm back on the boards again after just ordering my 1.8 dualie G5!!!!!!!!

Things have been crazy, I've since changed jobs (for the better) my daughter was born Monday last week, healthy as an ox, and the Bay Area is finally starting to live again.

Thanks for holding up the crunching... not that I did all that much of it, but hey, it's nice to see things are still going strong.

I'll be back 'in effect' asap.

Anyway, it's good to be back again.

I hope it'll give me a little oomph... I don't have all the work PC's to abuse anymore.

Thanks jb, I too, will enjoy a little competition again here -- glad to see you're still kickin'.

My old company pretty much tanking knocked me outta the crunchin' business for a while, but I'll be back in full effect w/ the G5 :>

Looking forward to the competition. Oh did I happen to mention that I just started watering my new farm? Three 2400+ machines and one 1900+ machine by weeks end? The are doing the folding@home project.

Slipjack, welcome back! Sounds like lots of good news.

I'm like sideus though, don't remember them mentioning a dual 1.8ghz G5. Seems it was either a 1.8 single or a dual 2.0. Doesn't much matter though, it will still be a sweet machine.

Hey, slipjack, so great to hear from you. I was wondering where you'd gone off to. And that's great news about your job and your new baby girl. Welcome back!!!

I still have the same job. Survived yet another round of layoffs at the end of last year but things seem to be picking up and I'm getting busy again. On the team front I'm mostly doing work on folding@home and a little bit on dFold. I've since picked up two PC's as dedicated crunchers. It's a good thing I live in the fog belt of San Francisco because my room sure does get toasty ( and loud ). I wish I had a basement I could stuff all these computers into.

So start crunching again already!!

For anyone intersted in any DC, going to the dual 2Ghz makes a lot of sense for an extra $600.

Yes, it makes sense, but can I afford it?

Argh, now what do I do.. change my order to the dual? or just drop it until they come with a mid-range dual? (probably in 6-12 months)

I totally have enjoyed having the two processors... can I go back?

I'm such a goofball... I decided to go take a class at the local comunity college to get the educational discount... cancelled my order and I'll reorder once I enroll. I asked the sales rep and he said you don't have to be a full time student to get the discount!!! You just have to be enrolled!

Funny thing is I had just been thinking to myself recently, "Gee, Apple hasn't done much in a while... I guess that iTunes store took up everyone's time...' Boy was I wrong.

Actually, if anyone is pinced for cash... the dual 1.25 is a steal right now @ 1600!! You can still buy it from Apple, as it's the last of the OS 9 booting machines.

I couldn't go back to single processor on a desktop Mac. I've seen the light! But for me I will be waiting until rev 2 or 3. My dual 1gig is fine for now and I can't justify buying a new Mac after only owning this one for 1.5 years. But I can't wait to see how those new G5's perform on FAH or dFold. What I'm really dying to replace is my poor aging iBook 500MHz. I was hoping to see a revision to the 15" Powerbook so I'm still waiting.

Heads up on the "new" G4 dual 1.25 at $1,600, it is the pre Jan03 Powermac and not the one they were selling up to yesterday. Proof is the 2mb of L3 cache per CPU and OS 9 bootable. I don't know if they fixed the noise on these puppies.

Also the best value of the new G5 is the top model (dual!) followed loosely by the mid then the lower end trailing.
If they were available today I would have gotten a dual 2Ghz. But now I will wait for a rev2 which sould be at 2.5Ghz, or the mid model rev2 if it is a dual.

Just need to upgrade my Cube...

I cancelled... I'm now thinking I'll wait until 10.3 is installed... you know Apple will require $50 or more for 'all the new features'... that's business, as they say.

I, too, am toally happy with my 1Ghz dualie. I even play PC games on my virtual PC and they play almost as fast as a slightly old Pentium. (800 Mhz or better, I'd guess)

We now officially have the best of both worlds. You can use VPN to network to work just like you could from a PC!!!!!! The Mac rocks the PC world.

BTW... what needs crunching the worst right now? I can toss in some cycles...

I might be getting one of the dual 1.25s as a new desktop. It'll outperform what I currently have (single G4 500) by a ton. I'll just wait for benchmarks between that and the single 1.8
