So where is everybody anyway? No posts at all today. The stupid server for dFold is down again today for maintenance. This stupid client does not know how to gracefully handle that, so it just keeps giving me errors on the PC and then just freezes on my Macs!
If they can't fix this kinda crap I am gonna have to find a better written DC client to use. I can't have so many machines that need to be babysat whenever they have a stupid outage! At least SETI handled that gracefully, it just waited until later and tried again.
And I had just gotten my last machines switched over to dFold! So much for catching Scott!!!

Well actually I think the problems had to do with the release of a new client version. The attempt by several thousands of of clients to auto-up-date at about the same time, probably just completely overwhelmed the servers. This wasn't a new protein, but new client software. Guess the load was too much. It was pre-announced though that it was going to happen.
Early reports are that Linux clients are faster, at least initially. Don't know about Mac Clients.

Dang, all four of my Win PC's went down with the new client. Having a hard time getting them back up. Too tired to mess with it tonight or to try to make sense of the errors, so just threw them back on F@H for now.
I actually had one 75% complete protein on one of my boxes, that hadn't expired yet. It is on the Athlon 2400 and needs about 5 more hours, and actually still has 2 days before it expires. Cool! 55 points worth. The others all had to start clean because their previous proteins had expired, or would have taken too long to finish in time.

Mac client got stuck trying to autoupdate. It would do the download then hang. I ended up downloading the client from the web site and that got it going again. The PC at work looked like it updated okay but I would have thought I'd show some points by now. I had to temporarily turn it off late this afternoon. Hmmm, maybe I forgot to turn it back on.

My PC at work is shockingly slow since the update. It's only gotten through about a little over half of the first generation of 10,000. 12 hours to do half the 1st generation? My Mac is on the 23rd generation in roughly the same amount of time. Anyone having the same performance? I think I may download the client brand new and see if things get better.

I am unable to update to the new client. The old client hangs. It downloads a 4.7 MB file, which cannot be opened with Stuffit of gzip line command. When I ftp with Transmit, there are no files in /pub/distribfold/download.

I had to reinstall on all OSX machines.
Go to their web download page to DL it. FSCKING client had me tearing apart my network for a day tracking down abnormal bandwidth usage, it turns out it was all the mac DF clients.

Downloading a brand new client did the trick. It's taken 1 hour 15 minutes to do 6300+ structures in the first generation. A lot better than before.

They have posted a new client:
CLI foldtrajlite.exe only
ftp://ftp.mshri.on.ca/pub/distribfol...ldtrajlite.zip
Screen Saver *.scr only:
ftp://ftp.mshri.on.ca/pub/distribfol...trajlitess.zip
I think the full downloads have also been updated with the new fixed/revised clients, too.
Production will be off for me a while until I can get around too all of those machines I just installed at my clients this weekend. This really sux. I now have to go back to every one of them and explain why I am back, not to mention upgrading all of mine at home again! I would also guess from the threads on their forum that there will be another new client in the near future that will fix the temporary fix put in by this new client.

f@h?
I might join you in a little bit. Just gotta take a final in an hour, then no more school for a month! Plenty of time to break computer equipment, and, uh, work on secret projects

I spoke too soon. The client died on me when I went out for lunch. Somthing about a corrupted file and that I needed to delete filelist.txt. So it started on a whole new first generation again. And I was just 9 structs away from finishing the 10,000. This has been a pain.

After 24 hours no output I decided to help Stanford. I retasked my little farm before I heard about the new client. I may bring a few back when the rest of the gang catches up in d-fold. You had me beat anyway so I was going over to f@h anyway. They (d-fold) just made the decision of when easier.

Reinstall it.
jbcool, I see I'm running a few machines on f@h, I'll leave some as a target for you. I forgot that I'm in a race with some folks in DF, so I'll finish that, then maybe play a little in f@h. Not sure yet. Retasking the farm is a pain.
But I have an extra 10 hours per week! No more school

It will take me at least a month or two to catch up over at f@h so there is no hurry. Just keep an eye on it as it is bellow 100 degrees here for a couple of days.
Enola just wanted to let you know your rank over at f@h this morning is "666".

Argh!! It bombed again. This time just after completing gen 1. Same error message. And this after a reinstall. They are turning off the power this weekend at my office so I'll try again on Monday. This is frustrating.

Well, I am getting close to giving up on this new client and finding a new DC to join. The stupid thing quit after it completed Gen 250! Probably lost 100,000 points on that piece of crap!!! This is really getting old. I am just starting to get things tuned up for this DC, just learning the fastest methods and now I feel like I am ready to just quit and go somewhere else. So much time though to come up to speed!
Any advice from our leaders would be welcome here.....

You can do like I did. RUN!!!
Or fight this and lose more points.
The choice is still yours, just decide if the frustration is worth it.
When a research team make as big of a mistake as the made with this last client and they waste work units in between I have not patience for them as we are all spending our time and money helping them out.
I step down from the soap box now.

I guess I can't leave now, I made it into the top 100 for the dFold project! Pretty cool, shows what a small project that dFold really is overall, it also helps that they started over with Phase II scoring.

The box that was giving me such a headache is finally behaving itself. Three clean installs later and it's finally getting past the 1st generation. I hope it gets all the way to 250.

Just goes to show you that a few people willing to give a little of themselves might be able to actually make a difference.
