I set up 2 Dell machines to run SETI this weekend, and to my chagrin, they seem really slow. 1 ghz PIII is taking ~30 hrs. to crunch 1 unit, and a 2 ghz. PIV is taking ~15 hrs. per unit.
This really suprises me, as my dual gig G4 will do 2 W/U's every 6-7 hours, and my 2 G4 450's will average 11-12 hrs.
Is the Pentium really that bad at SETI? The 2 boxes sat idle all weekend (no other tasks), with the SETI app on constantly, and minimized, no other appps open. Win 2K.
I was hoping for more, seeing as how I've heard that the SETI isn't optimized for G4, and that supposedly, Windows boxen had an advantage.

Screensaver or GUI client, right?
Use the CLI for insane speed.
I'd put the p3 at, oh, 5-6 hrs per WU.
Not sure on the P4, depends on the chip.

Yes, GUI. I didn't see a CLI option on their downloads page--I'll have to look again. (Ugh. DOS?)

Yeah, for some reason the CLI version for Windows is under their UNIX download page at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html.
Good luck getting that running!
[EDIT: Well, actually, I guess that page is for all CLI versions. The URL seems to suggest UNIX, though.]

Thanks for the info, but I'm not touching DOS with a barbeque fork. I'd sooner eat glass.
With that said, I'm impatiently awaiting delivery of an iMac G4 800. should be here in a couplew of days.
Should be able to get my SETI production above 15 W/U per day with that on board.

Check out this thread:

It is REALLY VERY SIMPLE to setup as a background process with the instructions that Scott gives in this example. If you need any help, feel free to ask, I ran it for years with no problems. You can probably double or even triple your production with the CLI client over the screensaver version.
