Has anyone managed to get the D2OL client to work properly under 10.2 ? I can get the daemon running but can't see any windows or figure out what node I am. Can't see progress...if any.

Dave, There is a bug in the current client under 10.2.x The fix, figured out by our very own mikkyo, is posted in the D2OL forums, but here it is step by step.

quit the client (you may need to use process monitor to force quit dockwin.exe and/or gridwin.exe)

1.) control Click on the D2OL package and select "show contents". This will open a window with a folder that says "contents".

2.) double-click on contents to open it. you will see a file called "info.plist"

3.) open that file by dragging and dropping it on top of "Text Edit" Down towards the very bottom you will see a line that reads <string>1</string>. Change the 1 to a zero and save the file. Make sure it saves with only .plist, and does not add .rtf or .txt.

Now when you restart the client, it should show in the dock and will allow you to bring up the client agent (showing node, protein, etc) at any time. In order to fully quit the client, you will still need to use the process monitor or terminal to forcequit it. The good news is that like folding@home, it does a good job of getting out of the way of other apps so you can leave it running all the time on everything but the slowest Macs.

The better news is that the version 2.0 of the client being beta tested now, fixes the problems above along with a great many other improvements for all platforms and the entire backend system. It had been planned to be released next week, but our excellent team of beta testers managed to find a few more glitches for Windows 98. If all goes well it should be ready for prime time in about 2 weeks (for TSC followed by D2OL), unless we manage to break the new backend server system this weekend with a planned stress test.

Oh, the D2OL client is 2 different applications. The GUI agent uses a lot of CPU power though and is only needed to view results. If you quit the agent and let only the docking engine run in the background, you see a dramatic increase in performance. Once the "fix is applied, you can re-start the agent from the Docking engine's menu, anytime you want to check on things.

I second that about quitting the agent and let the crunch run in the background, especially on low end CPUs.

While a 1.25 GHz G4 still can use 80% of the CPU for cruncing with the GUI running the a G4/400 and lower can be more or less brough to it knees with the molecule display at high res and animation on....

So skip the pretty screen stuff

Thanks. I was unable to find mikkyo's solution when I looked through the forums earlier. I did this and it does show up in teh dock now. I still don't see the status window which I'd like to see so I can sign up my credits for team macnn, and the preferences window doesn't work, but maybe 2.0 will fix those. Appreciate your help.

Got it - if I suspend tasks, it shows the agent! Thanks!

Glad that worked out. Welcome aboard! And yes, the new client (2.0) is so far looking very good and fixes a number of problems, include back end server issues.
