was just wondering how much energy it uses with the screen off?

That depends entirely on the computer that it is running on. It will run your computer's CPU at 100% utilization, which will actually generate quite a bit of heat, which causes increased power consumption over an idle computer. If your computer is set to sleep when not in use, the additional energy drain of using the computer to analyze Folding@Home (or any other "DC" distributed computing client) is rather substantial. A computer that is asleep uses VERY little energy. A computer whose CPU is running a DC client 24/7 is probably using 2-3 times as much power as one that is used and then sleeps between uses or is turned off at night. How much that is depends entirely on the actual computer that you are running it on....

You can save a lot of energy and reduce power by turning your screen/monitor off. Especially if it is a tube type monitor. LCD screens use less energy, so the energy savings will be less, but it can still make a difference. If you can't turn a monitor off, putting it into "sleep/energy saving mode" will still help, even with an LCD monitor.
