I currently run Fold@home graphical client on a 7500 with a 350 MHz G3/512 with 300 MB RAM and OS 10.1.5 and the same thing on a 7300/200. The problem is that even with the G3 it takes more than 3 weeks for one unit so I will really not contribute any additional work as my units will be releocated as I do not finish in time. ( Yes I know I still get the credit but I want to contribute in real terms as well)

Is the Ubero and distributed foldning as slow? As I recall there was a trick of increased memory allocation from 25 to 150 MB that was supposed to speed up distributed folding?

RC72 is not science and SETI really is a borderline beween science and philosophy and D2OL is out as it require 10.2

TIA and lets keep on chrunching

Ubero was doing useful work, but that work was completed and no new work is being done at this time. They are not dead, just sort of on indeterminate hold.

D2OL might be your best bet. Strictly speaking, it does not need 10.2 so much as it needs Java 1.4.1. If you could install Java 1.4.1 (from source if need be), D2OL just might run fine. Since D2OL uses Java, it should also respond to the memory allocation tricks we developed for Ubero.

I'm not up on dFold's latest clients, so someone else will have to speak on that. Since it still starts from a random seed number, it does not have a time limit, so it might be a good bet also. But I've heard a lot of complaints about the client recently.

Here is how you might run the Java 1.4.1 installer on a 10.1.x system. Warning, it could also hose your install, so try this at your own risk.

Download the installer from here: (39.7 MB)
Code:
http://a1024.g.akamai.net/5/1024/3093/1/1a1a1a88ff63d249b72392f35785e656c63297c52897043397067deb57c6278bfe2d82d504346a9bc8f82f6595c43c6bb7fe40a1073f96eb4c9b1148b00a79cf2558b1f5/Java141Update1.tar
Go into your OSX install to edit the following file:
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

You will need to do this as root, or from OS 9. Edit the two version parameters to 10.2.8 and change the build number to 6R73. This will allow the Java 1.4.1 installer to run on your 10.1.x system. That doesn't mean it will run correctly, so let us know the results if you try this.

I will try the distributed folding client first to see if I can get that one running. If I mess up my X systems I have to start at 10.0 and then do all the updates all the way to 10.1.5 using the xfacto and a lot deleting files manualy to be able to cram the OS into a 2 GB HD. Installing on the 7300/200 takes a day that optimizing and unpacking that a dual 1.25 makes in 10 minutes takes hours with one 200 MHz CPU

At a later date I will try the hack install of Java just for the fun of it, and tell you how it worked
