I have three clients of F@H running on two different machines. A GUI and a text version on one machine (dual 1ghz G4), and a text client on another machine (Linux). On the machine with 2 clients running, I have set the text version machine's ID to 2, assuming the GUI takes ID 1. On the second machine, I set the ID to 3.

How can I be sure I am getting credit for the different instances running? Is there some indication on the stats pages or something?

If you look at the official FAH stats for you personally it will say how many processors that have reported in the last week.

It is only necessary to set a specific machine ID on multi processor machines. You did exactly what you needed to do on the first machine, but on the second you could have just left it with an ID of 1. I wouldn't worry about it now though, if you change the ID in the middle of a work unit it might get a new one instead of finishing that one.
