Well, after inumerable problems and more then 1.5 months, I am finally getting some credit for BOINC beta test on Mac clients.

Here are some benchmarks finally for different machines running SETI units. Consider these approximate. Your mileage may vary significantly depending on exact configurations.
  • iBook 600 -13.5 hrs
  • PowerMac800 - 10 hrs
  • Athlon 2400 (Emachines) - 5.68
  • Celeron 1300 - 10.37
  • Celeron 2600 - 8.89

Found some stats for three confirmed G5's (different users) and they seem to all be averaging around 3.0 hours per unit. However I don't know what speed the G5s are. Interestingly, of the top 10 hosts (computers), with the highest recent average credit, 5 of them are G5s, including the top 3 http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/ap/top_hosts.php

BOINC-SETI is still beta, and the Mac CLI is not very elegant or well documented. This beta project still has a long ways to go to become Mac Friendly. And NO, there is no indication of any enhancements for Altivec. (yet - it is open source so who knows what will happen).

Hmm, what is BOINC and how does it tie in with Seti? I looked at their site, and it wasn't too helpful.

Read this link and then if you have any specific questions, ask.

In summary, BOINC is an open infrastructure that can be used for many different projects. SETI is the first projects that will be moved over to the BOINC platform, but it is still a couple of months out from the big move. The timelines provided at the link are a little out of date.

Folding@Home and several others have expressed interest in the BOINC platform for their projects as well.

seti@home for BOINC shouldnt be out until at least close to summer I think. Oh and when it does go to BOINC, you cant use the current client.

<*shameless plug>For an excellent stat logger/map program for OS X, check out http://www.tfworld.com/seti</a>!<*/shameless plug>

There is still a lot of uncertainty as to what will happen when. The goal appears to be to get SETI running well and then split it off from the BETA project and take it public. This might occur as soon as April, but then again a lot of uncertainty.

All current SETI users will be notified when the change is approaching. There may be a brief period of the old and new running concurrently.

The intitial change will still be processing data from the Arecibo antenna, essentially the same as the current SETI, other then the differences that are necessary for BOINC. In fact, SETI units from the beta project are now going into the science database, so SETI beta units are valid work. However, it is not known if SETI beta credits will carry over, when SETI on BOINC goes public. One of the hazards of beta testing.

I believe summer is still the target date to start processing data from the Parks Antenna. This is the big move often referred to as SETI 2.

Again, there is no certainty of timelines. Basically, if you are crunching SETI, just keep crunching, and make sure your e-mail address of record (for SETI) is valid. You'll be notified when it is time to make a move.

On a different note, a BOINC server has been setup at Stanford to begin testing for Folding@Home to possibly move to BOINC. Also the Climate Prediction.net folks are in discusssions about using BOINC as a platform as well.
