These first turned up in the Fold Race (The Exceptions) thread. With the race over, it's time to make them available to everyone.

As of tonight, they work for Team MacNN members on Folding, but we'll need to work on them some more. The forum does not pass URL variables properly to outside files, and we need a variable to make the sigs work. Rather than learning Apache's mod_rewrite module, we tried a quick and dirty 404 adjustment to the vhosts config, and parsed the REQUEST_URI environment variable to get the user IDs.

It works in iCab, Safari, Netscape, OmniWeb up to 4.2 ... but not in OW 4.5 or OW 5beta. It may break in other browsers too, please post if it breaks in your browser.

Here are the sigs:
Team MacNN Folding
http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs.php

reader50
http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs/UID=1/sig.php

scotttheking
http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs/UID=2/sig.php

hotani
http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs/UID=476/sig.php

Edit the UID=xxx part, to make the xxx your UID on teamstats. You can find the UID in the URL to your personal page on teamstats. To make the sig live on the forum, enclose the sig URL inside vBB image tags like this:

[ img]http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs/UID=1/sig.php[/ img]

Just remove the space inside each tag and it will work ... at least, in most browsers we tested tonight. Use these URLs with caution, I'm hoping mod_rewrite will be happy with the same URL workaround, but that is not guaranteed - so the sig URLs may change in the next few days.

I need to implement some cacheing code too, that may also change things. Once the sigs stabilize, they will be extended to our other projects. Available bandwidth on teamstats rules out turning on stats sigs for other teams.

Members of The Exceptions who are already using their separate sig entry points, please keep doing so. I'll leave those until the main sig URL is working smoothly for everyone.

-------------------
This was all supposed to be done by now, but my new digital camera got in the way of hobby work. Nice clear pictures, it revealed that I need to clean house some more too. oops.

For those people like me with <s>too much free time</s> a desire to add neat links, you can add a URL link to a sig image like this:
Code:
[ url=http://team.macnn.com][ img] http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs/UID=1/sig.php [/img][/url]
Just remove the space inside each tag, and make it a single line. I broke it across lines to avoid propping the forum page.

I had emailed OmniWeb support about the sig rendering problem, and this is the reply I got back tonight:
Hello,

Thanks for your report. We are aware of this issue and we are working to correct it in a future version of OmniWeb.

Sincerely,

Brian W.
Support Engineer
Omni Group
It looks like they recognize it as a bug, and plan to fix it in OW5 if they can. Everything else is done, this is the only holdup to turning on sigs for all projects.

Should we:
  1. Turn on sigs for other projects now
  2. Wait for OW to fix this
  3. Wait for me to learn mod_rewrite
Opinions wanted.

Scott, your opinion counts the most since it's your server and your browser that's affected.

Edit: I can set up separate sig entry points for OW users on request, so they will see their own sigs. That would not make the regular sigs visible to users of OW4.5+.

If you don't have the time to learn mod_rewrite, I vote #1. At least it would pressure those OmniGroup guys to get around to fixing that bug.

I decided to look up mod_rewrite. Try adding the following to your httpd.conf file:

EDIT: Wait a sec while I test it out.

BAH, forget it. I can't get mod_rewrite to do anything on my apache install.

With enough trial and error, I got mod_rewrite to work on my local box. The rewritten sigs work in OW 4.5 too, which is good.

We need to play around on the server next to get it all working.

Teamstats page? The MacNN teamstats or the Stanford... anyways, I couldn't find my UID on either of 'em.

It's your Team MacNN teamstats UID. Your UID is 460, as shown from the following link:

Interesting, the "Select Stats Page" pulldown doesn't list the "Personal" page, but then I click the link you gave me and it does. Pfff. Thanks, nonetheless.

Yeah, there's no "Personal" pulldown. You actually have to go to the "Current Members" page and then find your name in the long list. I probably should write a plugin to the CMS that will allow users to specify their UID for each project.

Ooh... Looking at the team page again I realized that you have to click the user's RANK to go to his/her MacNN team page, not the user's name itself (the name takes you to the Stanford stats page). I wonder how many times I clicked my username on that page hoping that maybe THAT time it would take me to the MacNN personal stats page.

Our stats pages are designed to preserve as much of the project stats as possible. In particular, SETI allows users to set a web link on their name. Most other projects have the name rigged up to a basic personal page. So I kept the name links and added our personal link to the rank number.

The Personal Page doesn't appear in the pulldown menu unless you are already there. The site does not use cookies at this time, so it would have no idea which personal page to send you to if you chose that from a generic page. It appears once you are already there, because the pulldown is also an indicator of where you are.

I should probably write up a basic help guide for the site, but there are many other things I should do also. Ranks, including for D2OL. Multisigs perhaps. And of course, UT. One of these days, they will all happen.

And when they do all happen, then there will be something else that needs to be done.

Thanks again reader50 for all you have done, and when you do someday get to the next great thing, whatever it is, thanks for that too.
