A rather heratic question but they are both working for the glory of Team MacNN.
My observation is that with both computers runnning Win95 with 64 MB RAM the 300 MHz Cyrix is not faster than the AMD 166 MHz.
Is this an intrinsic weakness of the Cyrix CPU or could it be a messed up Win 95? it is as far from a clean install as you can get as it is a salvaged junk computer.
If the OS or application is to blame I do have the option to do clean install of Win 95 and run SETI or get WIn 98SE and perhaps pick an other DC to run for the team, perhaps D2OL were my 4th spot will soon get in trouble

cyrix processors were very underpowered. They still are a lot weaker then a CPU from AMD or Intel, but not quite as much (They are called VIA C3s now, because VIA bought Cyrix).
I'm not sure about back then, but it probably has a 1/2 clock FPU, and only one. It's better then nothing though.

I have a couple of Pentium 1 - 233 Mhz MMX chips that you can have, they should outrun both of the CPU's mentioned pretty handily! If you are interested, let me know.
Speaking of odd/old CPU's, I found one in a system that I cannabalized for parts last week that I never knew existed. It is an IBM branded 6X686 chip running at 150 Mhz. It is a Socket 7 chip, but I have never seen one before. Anypne know anything about it?

Thanks I will rellegate the Cyrix to work as a email reader if I ever will be able to install Win 95 on a AMD /233 to replace it. I have spent most part of a day fighting with it. D:/ and then "Install" get the installatian CD going but then when it is about to finsh the installation it ask for files on the Win95 folder and now the OS can not find the D drive that I am installing the OS from.
I can reboot without those files but network card and graphical cards does not work properly despite installing drivers to there must be somthing in the comunication between hardware and OS that require those files.
It is less complicated installing OS X on a unsupported Mac like the 7300/200 than it is installing Windows 95 on supposedly supported hardware, I will go kiss my dual 1.25 G4 despite its loud fan

If you can get access to a Windows 98 boot floppy, the best way to do it is:
Go into the device manager for the system and record the model names/numbers of the things like video card, ethernet card and sound cards.
Download those drivers and put them on a floppy or a CD.
Boot from the Windows 98 Boot floppy and format the drive.
Copy the Win95 directory from the CD to the C drive and run setup from there.
It will completely install Windoze from the directory you copied it to and will not need the Windows CD again.
Reload the drivers that you downloaded earlier and you are good to go.
If you do not have a Windows 98 boot floppy, you can get one here:
http://www.24by7.ca/files/boot98se.exe
This site is reeally helpful for all kinds of boot floppies:
http://bootdisk.com
Their web page states: All Disks Include Universal CDrom Drivers.

Thanks for the info on the boot floppies
Unfortunaly that 95 boot disk did not work at all as the D drive was not found from the floppy so I could not even start the installation. I will make one last go when I get Win98SE if that fails that one will go to the junk yard.
If I get W98 o run on the AMD/233 I will take the Cyrix300 out of comission. It only manages per hour it only manages 1.5 % of a SETI unit. And as a AMD/166 manages close to 2% I expect that the AMD/233 will do close to 3%/h. I looked on the net for Cyrix reviews I found out that the FPU is known to be a lot inferior to the celeron...
Just for the fun of it I will dig get out a 7600/200 and se how it fares in X and 9 runnning SETI. A 200 MHz 604E and a 512K L2 Cache ought to work better than that whimpy Cyrix

Are you sure it's a 300Mhz and not a 300GP? Cyrix was famous for giving non-speed related numbers to their processors...
The GP (MII) for example 'was' to be produced in 2 flavours 66 & 75Mhz fsb so the chips actually ran @ 225-231Mhz.
Additionally is your AMD 166 a K5 or K6? as only the K6's were actually rated @ 166Mhz... either way, very embarrasing for that Cyrix processor LOL

OneMacGuy, you wouldn't happen to have a P3 Katami (I think that's it) running at 600MHz (or 450, or 500, or 550), would you?
