Hi, I've set up all of our computers in the house with Folding @ Home now.

- iBook, 300 MHz G3
- iMac, 700 MHz G4
- PowerMac (Sawtooth), Dual 1.3 GHz G4
- PeeCee, 1 GHz Duron or whatever the low cost AMD processor was called

They're all crunching right now and i've run this script for the OS X folding software to make it use both processors, which works fine now. But I was wondering whether or not Folding@Home uses Altivec? I'm a bit confused now since I have read contrary reports on forums and haven't found a way to determine it. So, does it support Altivec or not, and if not, how can I enable it? (different core? i need a detailled installation manual then)

There is nothing more that you need to do.
- Tinker cores do not use Altivec
- Gromacs cores do use Altivec, it will automatically download if needed.
- The core used is determined by the work unit.

Go to this page: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html It will show all of the current work units and what core they use. You can look up the work unit that you have and see what core it uses, how many points it is worth, and what its expiration time is. Some units can and do take several days.

Oh, and just in case you are wondering, you CANNOT control which type of work unit you get, though some seem to think that you can increase your odds of Gromacs units with certain settings on the CLI client.

I didn't expect to control which type of unit one gets anyway But thank you for the clearance about the cores. Now I know.

Thank you very much,
Thilo
