For those who don't monitor the Predictor website, here is the latest news. This is important because after discovering the cause of the DB crashes, they have decided to go ahead and proceed with their upgrades and the migration to BOINC 4.x Read the following for details. Finish crunching any work in queue and return it before you try to update your clients.

8/30/04 -Update of the day:

We have discovered what is behind the current problems with the database and the fact that many people don't get any wu's anymore. It has to do with the problems we were experiencing in the past few days with Charmm wu's on linux; many wu's on linux machines were crashing which caused the boinc client to ask for even more wu's (up to the daily quota of a 100). Many of the wu's currently waiting to be submitted by the scheduler need to be crunched by linux machines as well (remember homogeneous redundancy?). This has created a spiraling cycle where many windows and mac machines are asking for work at regular intervals (1h) and are clogging up the system including the db. Boinc should be able to resolve this situation by itself in due time, but since more and more people are moving to version 4.x and we are reaching the end of CASP, we think it is wise to stop P@H at this moment and start the migration to 4.x.

We have learned an awful lot in these past months and we are planning to take some time (up to 2 weeks) to address some fundamental issues in the applications Mfold and Charmm (especially Charmm). During this time, we'll keep collecting the last results and assigning credits. During the migration you are welcome to upgrade your boinc clients to 4.x and help the other projects sah and cpdn until we're back online. Please keep connected to P@H so that your client will keep trying to contact us until we're back!

We keep the forums open as much as possible to allow you to write your impressions and comments and keep P@H alive. We'll create a special category for providing comments and ideas: let us know how we did and how we can improve things.

Any idea on when we can expect super-optimized builds of the 4.xx series client? I will let my farm go for a day or two to finish out the WU's I currently have, but want to switch over ASAP after that.

And I was just starting to really get things going good too. I had finally caught Shaktai and was within about 2 or 3 days of Mikkyo.....oh well

Well since we are all at an equal disadvantage, I doubt you'll lose a step. I am sure not going to catch you, unless I win the lottery or something. Sounds like it will take a few days for the changeover. 3 of my boxes were already out of work though, so I am switching them over, and will decide whether to put them on SETI or ClimatePrediction until they get Predictor back up.

Good news about BOINC v4.05 is that it does a much better job of resource sharing, so if you set it at 5% for one project and 95% for another, that is what it will crunch, as long as both projects have work available.
