hi
I've been running Boinc Seti for over a week now, and I'm wondering just where the various documents connected with Boinc are supposed to be located. I thought they would all be in one happy folder. But no, they are scattered throughout my home folder. I do have a folder labeled Boinc, some documents are in there, but it seems when new documents are created during the run process, they are just put in my home folder(in alphabetical order). They old docs. are left in the Boinc file. Hate to sound like a pest, but I like things to be where they should be. If anyone out there has a suggestion as to how to convince the updated docs. to go where I want, into a set folder, I will try them.
Also is there a simple way to get the Seti progam started, I usually have to drag the 'Boinc 4.1.13' doc. out of my home folder to get it started in terminal. Have found out how to quit from reading the forum msgs. Oh, almost forgot. How do I find the climate boinc program. I thought about running that one also, but can't find a download site.
thanks

I can't help you with keepting the files all neat. I have seven different BOINC files in my user folder, outside the BOINC folder itself.
For Terminal, I start the Terminal application, type "cd boinc" to change directory to the BOINC folder, and then type "./boinc*" and BOINC starts running SETI and CPDN. When you type those commands, don't type the quotes ("). Another command you might remember is "./boinc* -help" -- this command gives up the proper format for issuing update, attach, detach, etc. commands for BOINC projects.
The CPDN getting started page is at http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cp...nload_main.php

Thanks for the quick response. I tried those commands you suggested, no luck. I just got the response 'comand not found'.
I finally got Boinc back running by dragging the boinc document to the terminal window, it expanded and started running, or rather continuing what had been running before. I copied the file map that opened the boinc file, its this:
[Jakes:~] jake% /Users/jake/boinc/boinc_4.1.13_powerpc-apple-darwin
I opened another shell and tried it and got response that item was running in another window, so it is a good address.
so if I wanted to go straight to the file when I started the terminal, what would I type? Would I do a cd first?
I have copied the good address to a text file so I can just copy and paste. Maybe thats the best way to go.
Thanks again

Here is what I do: The following is for Einstein@home but works the same for Seti@home
1. First I keep the "Folder" on my desktop for convenience, but you can use it from anywhere
.
2. I shorten the name of the application to boinc_4.13 (or whatever the latest version number is) which just reduces typing. Cut and paste is okay if that works for you.
3. Open a terminal window and type cd, then drag the boinc folder into the terminal window. This will set the path to the folder without typing:
Code:
Last login: Thu Nov 25 22:30:22 on console
Welcome to Darwin!
[iBook600:~] xxxxxxxx% cd /Users/xxxxxxx/Desktop/BOINC-Einstein
4. Now type the name of the application (whatever you have it called) preceeded by the ./
Code:
[iBook600:~/Desktop/BOINC-Einstein] xxxxxxxxxx% ./boinc_4.13:
2004-11-27 09:18:01 [---] Starting BOINC client version 4.13 for powerpc-apple-darwin
2004-11-27 09:18:01 [Einstein@Home] Project prefs: using your defaults
You should now be off and running with all the projects you are connected to. If you don't set the path correctly, then you may end up with the "files scattered about". I don't have that problem doing the above. The long rows of xxxxxxxxx would just be your personal log-in information, instead of mine.

Hi Shaktal
Tried out your suggestion, followed them step by step, no luck. After dragging the item to the command line, then I would just get back either a 'command not found', a 'permission denied' or no such file or directory. Even just typing in ' ./boinc' I would get 'permission denied'. I am missing something somewhere. Will just pasting the address to the terminal, that seems to work fine.
Curious item is that the various seti/boinc documents don't want to go into a specific folder, just spread out thru my home folder Tried to put them together, but when they were updated, they were back on the street. I even had a folder, projects, with the several tasks that had been run or were running. They stay together, but some are duplicates of other files in Boinc folder. Old classic Seti at least kept it's documents together in one folder. Guess I will move on to something else and if I get fed up, trash everything.
Thanks for the help.

Okay, Let's try this from the top. If the documents are being scattered around, then that indicates the program is working, or trying to.
1.) Be sure to place the BOINC program in its own folder. Call the folder BOINC or something.
2.) Open a terminal window.
3.) type cd in small letters followed by a space.
4.) drag the "folder" that you placed the BOINC program in, to the terminal window.
5.) Hit return. This should show the path to the folder and give you a new command prompt.
6.) type ./boinc_4.13 (or whatever the program is named. type the full name.
The program should now start up and run, but place all of the supporting files in the folder that the program runs out of.
If you want to shorten the name for ease of typing, you must rename the program file to the shorter name, before entering it in the terminal.
TERMINAL BOINC COMMANDS
You will eventually need these. They are the terminal commands used to add, change or update projects you are registered for. You can run mulitiple projects in the same terminal window (but only one at a time).
-attach_project
Attach this computer to a new project. You must have an account with that project. You will be asked for the project URL and the account ID.
-show_projects
Print a list of projects to which this computer is attached.
-detach_project URL (the URL part of the command is the URL of the project you are wanting to add, change update or delete such as: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/
Detach this computer from a project.
-reset_project URL
Clear pending work for a project. Use this if there is a problem that is preventing your computer from working.
-update_prefs URL
Contact a project's server to obtain new preferences. This will also report completed results and get new work if needed.
-return_results_immediately
Contact scheduler as soon as any result done.
-run_cpu_benchmarks
Run CPU benchmarks. Do this if you have modified your computer's hardware.
-check_all_logins
If 'run if user active' preference is off, check for input activity on all current logins; default is to check only local mouse/keyboard
-exit_when_idle
Get, process and report work, then exit.
-allow_remote_gui_rpc
Allow GUI RPCs from remote hosts
-help
Show client options.
-version
Show client version.
NOTE: to use these commands you must "stop" the currently running project, and restart with the command like:
./boinc_4.13 -update_prefs http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/
I hope that is clearer.

OK. Will do as you suggested. Also will save your command items for future reference. I moved a Setiathome file out of the Projects folder. Went away, came back to find many, many lines of data where seti was trying to get results back and start a new program. Put the file back into Projects folder, and when the wait timed out, seti located the files, uploaded the info and downloaded another project. Seems to be working just fine. Will play around with the commands you gave and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Will play with what I was dealt.
