Hey everyone,
Finals are next week, then a long flight home, then 2 weeks visiting the family. One thing that'll be happening is some work on my network and servers. The database server has been limping along on 2 of it's 3 HDs for the last few months, and that needs to be fixed. A shiny new 160GB drive will be meeting me there, to replace the 20GB that failed. The drive will be the new swap drive, plus it'll give us space for 2 weeks of backups of the database. I'm actually a bit rusty, having not done anything since August with the servers, so I'll be going slow. Should take 4 hours or so. I'll post when it's going down.
Thanks to those who have been clicking on the google ads on the team.macnn.com site, and buying things thru the affiliate links like crucial and amazon, also on the team.macnn.com site. I wouldn't have been able to buy the new HD without that support.
I'll also get to tweak the farm, so my folding performance should increase by a noticeable amount. I think I've got 2 idle boxes right now!
The servers are getting older, and I've been thinking of what to do with them, since I'm really far away it's not fun to deal with hardware failures, and if something really died (got lucky that the database box was able to keep going with me disabling it's swap drive remotely) there wouldn't be much I could do.
I've been thinking about trying to replace the boxes either this summer (2005) or next (2006). There may be some new developments with the stats in the foreseeable future, and if they turn out it'll work well to upgrade when those roll out. We'll see.
