http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html

$499.

I, for one, am going to be after anyone who ever asked me for help to buy one of these.

My math below - any comments?

$400 - Sawtooth mac capable of taking a Dual 1.7Ghz G4 upgrade card
$800 - Dual 1.7Ghz upgrade card
====
$1,200 - 3.4Ghz

$1,500 - Three mini mac's
$70 - 3-port KVM plus DVI adapter
====
$1,570 - 3.7Ghz

Dat ain't bad numbers for what it will do on OGR. My 933 QS2K2 does 1.8T avg. So $1500 buys you 5.4T minimum.

Life is good no?
iMac - C2D, 2.8Ghz, 4GB, 320GB
MacBook - C2D, 2.4Ghz Uni, 4GB, 500GB

Not going to be adding any of those anytime soon (too many computers already), but you could fit a dozen or more of those in the space of one tower.

Your math is off. The Dual 1.7 upgrade is only $700. It's the Dual 1.7 that is based off of 1.6s that is $800. But 1.7GHz is 1.7GHz.

It's my information that's off..not the math Didn't know there were two types of 1.7 upgrades..now I know

At any rate, for a tower owner it's a no brainer to upgrade...but for PC users who want PPC crunchers.. I still think the mini's would make great farm boxes.

Nice small form factor but no real processing power. I think I will stick with my AMD / Intel platforms for team work. I would be more impressed with something like this if it was a dual G5 2GHz Plus box. Have always felt that my money was better spent with a no apple product due to all the software written for it.

No I am not trying to do apple bashing. I owned four of them and was alway frustrated due to the lack of third party software and the ability to upgrade the boxes, with out purchaseing a complete new system.

The small size and being prebuilt makes it a nice idea as you could stack like 20 in a corner and crunch away.
If they were G5s, it would be competitive.
Otherwise building Athlon systems in a homemade rack is way more bang for the buck.
Still it is a very convenient mac package.

WOW 20 in a corner? Now that is what I call a nice budget. I was thinking more along the quantity of 5.

I do like the size! We just need more power Scotty!

Shaktai says he isn't going to get any but we will probably see 10 of them stacked over in the corner in his next farm picture.

Naw! I've got to relocate in a month and a half back to Colorado. I'm getting rid of stuff (not computers) rather then getting more. Of course I'm hoping that the new place may have a room, just for my computers, so that I can reclaim the dining area for things like eating and entertaining. It will be a few months before I have any more money for play.

You know though, I could fit a dozen of them sideways, across the top of my computer desk hutch. Hmmm!!!

Or you could buy a hundred of them and get a sheet of glass and make yourself a desk out of them.
