I am new to BOINC and am trying to install it in Mac OS X. To replace SETI classic. I downloaded "boinc_4.19_powerpc-apple-darwin.gz" and unstuffed it but when I double click on the resulting file "boinc_4.19_powerpc-apple-darwin" my Mac does not know what application to use to open it. What program do I need to use so I can get BOINC installed?

Some other questions I have:
Is this program command line only?
Where is the screensaver download like with SETI classic (it would be a shame if it just ran in the background since it is uninteresting without the screensaver)?
I also downloaded the G4 optimized "boinc_4.19_ppcG4.sitx" and 7450 optimized "Seti_Worker_G4_7450_altivec.zip" versions but none of them will install.

Boinc is command line based but there are GUI controllers.
You have boinc already installed, but you need Terminal to run the program, double-clicking doesn't work.
There are MacOS X/Unix instructions on all the boinc projects sites, or you can see here.

I'm sure running the command line version of BOINC is all well and good, but one of the reasons I started running SETI@home in the first place was for the screensaver. I know the command line version processes work units much faster too, but I don't care.

To me, using a command line some 30 years after personal computers hit the market is ridiculous. Yes it's powerful and fast, but I don't want to type that much or remember all the arcane commands.

Also, I'd rather watch SETI start to do its thing before dimming my screen, not simply use the Mac OS X screensaver with BOINC running in the backgound. OK, I'm done ranting.

Question is, will there be a screensaver for BIONC/SETI, and if so, when might it be available?

They are supposedly working on a screensaver version for platforms other then windows, but it is not ready yet and no recent word on when. BOINC is still a work in progress, so I suspect it will be a while. You can also download a "development version" of the BOINC menubar GUI for OS-X, from the SETI Site. It works with all projects, but is still "beta status" so use at your own risk. I tried it, and had no problems. (It isn't optimized but is very easy to use.
