We had to turn off unregistered posting in the team forum this morning. Last night, we came under sustained spammer attack, to the tune of 28 spams for online gambling.

The spam bot was fairly sophisticated. It would post a test spam, wait an hour or so, try again, wait ... and if a Mod isn't on duty to delete the spams, then it posts a bunch more. Once we came on and cleaned it out, the spambot went back to test mode. It came from a fair number of different IP addresses too, even though it was obviously the same bot.

Normally, we allow unregistered posting in this forum, to be friendly to visitors from other teams. In a week or two, we'll enable unregistered again and see what happens. It would be a shame if one spambot stays interested and spoils things for so many real people.

For reference, we've allowed unregistered for several years now in team. This is the first time we've had a big enough problem to temporarily pull it.

Take a look at how it ended up. Normal view, what the forum looks like now:

Looks perfectly normal. But when you are logged in as a Mod, you still see deleted spam threads. Check this out:

Unregistered posting of replies has been turned back on. It turns out vBB can set permissions separately for replies and for posting new threads. If the spammers don't discover the replies, we may turn unregistered thread creation back on too.

If you look at the "comments" on the stats page, it is all porn, etc.

That's on the team news page. Thanks for the heads up, I'll clean it all out again.

They are cleaned out. 800+ spam comments, and about 200 spam users. User registration is temporarily blocked because geeklog doesn't allow any filtering. If there isn't a later version with more control, I'll code the needed changes in myself before turning user creation back on again.

As a side effect, all anonymous comments got deleted. Sorry to all affected. There were some legit anonymous comments posted within the first couple months, but it would have taken too much time to preserve them. As it is, cleaning out the spammers still took close to two hours.
