Help! I have one mac (out of 5) that suddenly won't download tasks. Here is the error message:

Sat Aug 19 21:52:49 2006|SETI@home|State file error: missing task 16ap06aa.5570.12480.784646.3.183

I have the v6-nographics and superbench installed...maybe there is an issue with one of those? Or the combination? The odd part is that I have the same thing on another G5 machine with no problem. This just started happening yesterday when I restarted SETI (due to the rosetta mess). If I detach and reattach everything is fine again for a while. Then it happens a day or so later.

Any suggestions?

TIA

I wonder if this has anything to do with the new 5.17 application conflicting with Alex's optomized app? the auto-upgrade feature may be trying to replace the optomized app.

Well the obvious first move is to check permissions.

You could also check that this preference setting is set to 'No'.

'Leave applications in memory while suspended?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') '

Yep, it's set to "No". That is a "General Preference", and I am not having a problem with any other project or machine.

Check permissions for which file(s)? And what should they be?

Thanks,
Erik

In OSX use Applications/Utilities/Disk utility.app for a quick check or run same app from the install disk.

Ah, you're talking about Repair Permissions. I use Macaroni to do that weekly automatically. I just ran it again, and they're fine. Still getting the error messages.

I thought you were talking about specific permissions for one of the files within BOINC or Alex's application.

Any other ideas? I really do think it has something to do with the new version somehow not working with the optomized application somehow.

That's it from me. It could be a version problem. I am running Alpha version 5.5.13 and did have a problem. I had to do a total uninstall, re-install an older version that I knew was ok, with the optimised installed, and then upgrade it back up to 5.5.13. It works and the WU's validate ok now, but there is still an error message.

I just detached (again), removed any remaining SETI xml files, and reattached without Alex's optimized clients. Tasks downloaded sucessfully this time.

However, the applications say 5.13. Is S@H sending out tasks under both?

So I don't know if the problem was with 5.17 or the optomized application, or the combination of the two.

I'm going to let it run under the non-optomized stock application for a few days and see if the problem comes back. Then I'll try installing the optomized application again.

Repairing permissions via Disk Utility only works on files/folders created using the OSX Installer. In other words, things installed via install packages. The Installer writes out a simplified copy of the pkg in /Library/Receipts/ that contains the expected permissions for all the files/folders that package created.

So long as the Receipts are not deleted, permissions repairs work on most things that are important, like the core system. The OS is installed via packages, as are most major applications. But BOINC and most (all?) other DC clients are installed manually, so no receipt.
