One more reason to not like Sony: A PlayStation 3 firmware update at the end of this month will remove Life with PlayStation, the app that allowed PS3 owners to contribute to Stanford University's Folding@home distributed computing project.

I suppose one could skip the update, but usually that locks one out of online gaming. I really dislike these products where you buy it, but they still control it.

I agree, they sell you the device but retain control of it? That sounds more like a rental to me. I will stick with vintage consoles and PC games thank you very much, but then I still play UT2k4.

The PlayStation's "Core" processor, a PPC variant, was well suited to processing Folding@home's code. In the beginning the PS3s raced up the production charts and I suspect that this may have spurred the development of GPU apps for other @home projects through BOINC.
