When you shut the lid of a PowerBook does it stop all processes? I have a Ti Book and an iBook that could be running SETI, but the iBook is at work and must be locked away every night. It connects to an AirPort Base Station so my internet connection (DSL) is no problem. Would I need to leave it open somehow?

Heat from the CPU is exhausted thru the keyboard to prevent overheating. If the lid is shut, no heat can escape and the CPU could get too hot to function properly, even become permanently damaged.

To prevent this from accidentally occuring, Powerbooks (and probably iBooks) automatically go to sleep when closed. I'm sure you could disable if you really wanted to, but I suggest you don't.
If you put a bullseye on yourself, don't be surprised when someone takes a shot at you.

My Pismo 400 works VERY SLOWLY when closed. It works, but it's not worth the bother. If might be dangerous to run a 600 MHz laptop with no heat dissipator.
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.
