Okay, I hate to loose my mind.. but It has taken me 11 hours to get 62% of my work report done in SETI.
Someone I know with a 266 G3 took only 21 hours to COMPLETE a full work unit. WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON?!
So far my thoughts of apple are not very good, my 22" LCD has a defect, and they sent it back saying nothing was wrong with it.
Now I find out my dual 800 G4 goes slower than it should, and it seemed to overheat last night too.. I had the machine running the GUI program for OS X, plugged in my monitor (the keyboard/mouse were pluged to the monitor), and what do you know, the keyboard and mouse didn't even come on, no power
After I turned off the machine and turned it back on, instantly everything was fine.,.. Obviously it overheated. What the hell is going on here?!
I am deeply tempted to take the whole thing into apple's main building, tell them what a ****ing piece of shit it is, and have them replace the whole thing!
Right now, I would love it if someone could honestly tell me what their dual 800 takes to do a work unit

Since most of the actual stuff that needs help is SETI, I'm transferring this to the team forum.

Gee thanks (closes the topic... not!) rofl
Okay, just read a good joke, maybe it'll loosen things up a bit too
____
Got a letter from Grandma the other day.
She writes... the other day I went up to a local Christian
bookstore and saw a "honk if you love Jesus" bumper
sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because
I had just come from a thrilling choir performance,
followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the
sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, I'm glad I did! What
an uplifting experience that followed!
I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just
lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is... and
I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good
thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't
honked, I'd never have noticed!
I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! Why, while I was
sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy,
and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, "For
the love of GOD! GO! GO! Jesus Christ, GO!" What an
exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!
Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window
and started waving and smiling at all these loving people.
I even honked my horn few times to share in the love!
There must have been a man from Florida back there because
I heard him yelling something about a "sunny beach"... I
saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle
finger stuck up in the air. Then I asked my teenage
grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it
was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well,
I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the
window and gave him the good luck sign back.
My grandson burst out laughing... why, even he was enjoying
this religious experience! A couple of the people were so
caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of
their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they
wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is
when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all
my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on through
the intersection.
I noticed I was the only car that got through the
intersection before the light changed again and I felt
kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love
we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of
the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck
sign one last time as I drove away.
Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!
Love, Grandma

A G4 800 should complete two work units in 5-7 hours. Some variation in completion time is normal because each work unit is different.
The most likely cause of the slow crunch times is that SETI's graphics were left running. If used as an application, minimize the window into the Dock. If used as a screen saver, set the client to go to a black screen after one minute. These steps will kill the graphics display load, which takes a lot of CPU.
Further tips for optimizing the GUI client can be found in our tips for X (GUI) page. If those do not solve your problem, post back and yell some more. We'll keep working on it.
Also, you can get about a 10% boost by switching to the CLI client. You would have to run two copies of the CLI client in order to load up both processors.
Happy crunching.

On a side note if you do believe your G4 is overheating take it to Apple and they can set it up to test it. You will lose the comp for a night though and they may or may not charge you depending. Still if there is something wrong it should show up in that.

I have the same issue as JoeG4. My dual 800 also takes over 16 hours to complete a block using the seti gui and longer in the terminal app. I run it by itself most of the time Im not working on the machine, also have the screen saver disabled. What seems weird is it uses over 100% of my processor and seems to me not to take 16 hours, I have never times a unit myself. Im wondering if its timign gets screwed up cansidering it uses 100+% of the processors.
Joe
PS
Apple told me that running seti was cause my system to lose time. My clock in the OS loses time every day. It does reset itself when i reboot.
