I have a chance to pick up an e-machines with a 1.4 ghz athlon dirt cheap, but know nothing about them. It would be used solely for DC crunching (folding and/or ubero), along with my two macs. Is E-Machines any good, or would this just be a headache that won't go away (other than the OS which I know what to expect from it).

emachines = garbage.

If you want a for DC only computer, you build yourself a linux athlon.

How much does it cost?

$250. Don't want garbage. Guess that is why it is so cheap.

If you can tell me the exact specs, I'll tell you if it's worth it.
For $250, it *may* be worth it, especially if you can't build your own computer.

Just got home from work and got the info on it. Here it is. Almost brand new. (no monitor, somebody else took that. No network card either so I would need to get that to ethernet or airport with my current macs ) Previous owner passed away.

Specs are taken from the Best Buy website, but supposed to be same machine, except may only have 128 mb RAM

PRODUCT FEATURES
AMD Athlon™ XP processor 1600+ with QuantiSpeed™ architecture* operates at 1.4GHz

384KB cache memory for efficient system processing

256MB PC133 SDRAM for multitasking power, expandable to 512MB

40.0GB hard drive

16x10x32 CD-RW drive

S3 Savage4 Pro integrated graphics

3 USB, 2 serial, 1 parallel and 1 game ports

Windows XP Home Edition operating system preinstalled, and a bunch of other software I will probably never use.

I know next to nothing about PC market, so any recommendations are appreciated. If likely to be a problem machine, I will just wait until I can afford another Mac or something reliable.

As far as building my own, I could, just not motivated to do so. I've got too many irons in the fire already to want to mess with it. Guess that's why I am one of those no muss, no fuss Mac users.
