It's time for another round of recruiting for the team.
I've put some thought into how I want to do this, and I want other people's input, also. This is just the planning thread, so don't go out and do stuff quite yet.

I'd like to do a recruiting run starting on April 15th and running for about a week. This will be dedicated to recruiting for SETI. Then we'll do another, more general run starting right before MWNY, and running through the whole show, and then continuing when people start getting their product in.

We'll use this thread for discussion and planning.

My ideas:
This run is for SETI only. LWD is barking, and I think we should push them off a bit. SETI is our only stagnant team right now.
The recruiting will happen as follows (subject to change based on admins and other input):
1 recruiting post on macnn's main page. I'd like us to write up something that's well thought out, so that people don't need to look any further for basic about/faq stuff then that post.
Posts in a few of the big forums here, that are watched by people to answer questions.

I'd also like to see some knowledgeable people on IRC at all times for support.

More to come later, it's dinner time, and friends are waiting.

I like it.

I'd be happy to answer posts..., not really into IRC (Yes... it's a generational thing I think)

Are you looking for someone special? No, not for the weekend; I mean someone "really special". Someone who is "out of this world". SETI Team MacNN is. Join us in our Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. By helping us analyze signals gathered by the radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, you can take part in one of the most ambitious scientific searches in history and help us find that very special someone who is out there. To learn more, visit our Team page at SETI Team MacNN and become part of one of the greatest groups of Macintosh Users ever assembled. Don't have a Mac? That's okay, you can bring your PC. Come and join in the comraderie and excitement. Everyone is welcome.

come on people, we start this coming weekend.
Let's get some more input, and some names of people who are willing to go to other forums and recruit.

I've got some more ideas, that are less cutsie, but just haven't gotten them written down yet. Been sick most of the day. That's why I've been on the boards so much, between naps and nebulizer treatments. My heads just not clear enought to get my thoughts together.

we'll start monday.
someone needs to get me a short recruiting post for the main macnn page, and you guys need to decide what forums you want to recruit in, and who's going to create each one, and what's going to be posted in them.

Reader50 or I will get the main page posting up, but I'd like it if you all can do the rest.
Keep in mind that this is a SETI recruiting run only, although you can mention that we have other projects without saying what, and answer any questions people have.

Thanks,

Scott

I'd like this to start tomorrow.
So we need to decide right now what forums we are recruiting in (other then powermac and the lounge), what the posts will be in them, what the main macnn page post will be, etc.
I'm not going to be able to watch these threads, either.

Remember, this is a SETI only recruiting right now.

I'm willing to take the iBook forum. I was thinking of posting the following (and others can copy it if they like, I don't mind).

Title: Team MacNN recruiting for SETI

Team MacNN SETI, one of the longest running distributed computing projects, is actively seeking new members and the return of old members. Team MacNN SETI is currently ranked #35 among teams and continues to rise in the ranks, but needs help to fend off an aggresive challenge by Team Little White Dog.

SETI (Search for Extreterrestrial Intelligence) is a project that analyzes data from the radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to determine if there may be signals from other extraterrestrial life forms. You can participate in this exciting project by running a simple screensaver client that will process the data during times when you aren't otherwise using your computer. Don't waste those unused CPU cycles. Join Team MacNN SETI.

To learn more about Team MacNN SETI, the SETI project or any of our other distributed computing projects (if SETI doesn't tickle your fancy), visit the Team MacNN homepage and join in the fun.

-------------
*** I am going to move my 1 ghz Celeron over to SETI, as soon as it finishes its current F@H unit (sometime early tomorrow morning - a 5 pointer) and will leave it there until the DF competiion starts. That way I can say that I am actively in it if they ask. Also going to temporarily chang my sig graphic to the SETI one.

Speaking of SIG graphics, we need to come up with a good one for dFold so that we can make our run in style.

4 forums max for recruiting.
powermac, imac, lounge, and one more if you want.

Change that link to be the seti page, and it's all set.

What forums are covered by other people$ I will correct the link also.

Also, is that 4 forums max for the entire recruiting effort by everyone? Just want to make certain I understand the rules. If so, then I would opt for OS-X General discussion as the fourth and will take that forum.

Here is my post with the link corrected.

no, not going to AI.

Ok, recruit in powermac, imac, osx gen, and lounge.
Post one thread in each, keep it alive, answer questions, kick em to me if you can't answer it.
FYI, I know how to work SETI on most OSes, how to hide it, etc.

Just get the final one labeled as main news and posted in here and reader50 or I will get it sent in, even if it has to go in tuesday.

How is this?

MAIN NEWS

Team MacNN's SETI@Home team continues it's advance.

SETI@Home is one of the original distributed computing projects and Team MacNN SETI has established itself as a consistent and dominant contributer. SETI@ home is a project that involves the analysis of data from the radio astronomy telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. This data is broken down into small chunks and then via "distributed computing" is sent out to 10's of thousands of individual computers throughout the world. The information is then processed via a convenient screensaver or text client and returned to the SETI at home team at the University of Berkely in California. The purpose is to attempt to identify possible signals from intelligent extraterrestrial life. The SETI screensaver software uses the computer cycles that are not used by your computer for other activities.

Team MacNN's SETI@Home team has risen through the club ranks to #35 and is #49 overall of all teams. To date, this amazing team has completed more than 524237 data units and compiled more than 845 years of CPU time. Team MacNN is currently conducting a membership drive to invite new team members to join and to encourage old team members to return to activity. If you would like to learn more or to find out how you can get involved in this fascinating project, visit the Team MacNN SETI homepage at http://team.macnn.com/seti/index.phtml. A world of wonder and excitement awaits you. Join in on the fun.

Team MacNN SETI is just one of several Team MacNN distributed computing projects. Don't let your unused CPU power go to waste. Put it to good use supporting fascinating Scientific Research.

If we are a go, I will post my forum blurb, tonight after midnight in all four forums, before I go to bed. Starting tomorrow I will be working a Swing shift, so I can follow up mid to late morning before work. I will have to leave it to others to follow through in the afternoon and evening in the powermac, imac, osx gen, and lounge forums.

If there are any recommendations, objections or last minute suggestions, speak up now, or forever hold your peace.

Thanks! All we can do is try. I am going to start a new topic specifically for the Drive, now that we are past the planning stages.

I was thinking through the end of the week. How about it Reader?

Haven't had time to add any updates in the 4 forums this morning.

Somebody want to look up some good SETI Trivia and post it in the 4 threads just to keep them active. Just "bumping" them doesn't look too good when that is all folks see.

EDIT: Never mind I got it this time. Can somebody hit it again early this evening? Lots of neat tidbits of info and trvia on the SETI website. Only takes 5 minutes to look something up.

With our silver tongues, we will probably get all we are going to get within a week. Beyond that is mostly annoyance value. Unless new recruits keep knocking down our doors, in which case the drive should go on as long as people are coming.

I'll bet Scott had planned for it to run a month, or until LWD got really close. But I don't see how we could keep up the recruiting drive that long. Still, I've got a few ideas. We'll see about stirring the pot in the next few days.

People might be interested in Time Performances for Mac Vs Windows.

Average CPU hours
SETI: 17
Win: 21.11
Mac: 17.71
Ours: 14.01
Help us kick some Pentium butt

You could include that next time you bump.

EDIT: er, nevermind, ill do it....

Be a little careful with that statistic. It's true, but selective. The "Windoze" figure is for the Win screen saver, not the Win CLI. The "Mac" figure is from the OS 9 app/saver.

The Mac figure would go down to 14.2 hours if we used the Darwin 1.2 client, but the Win figure would drop to 10.09 hours then (i386 winnt CLI). Can't have that.

The Mac figure would drop to 8.77 hours if we used the rhapsody 5.6 CLI client's numbers, but everyone is using Darwin 1.2.

Those stats come from here, except for our avg, which comes from our member page, and the SETI project average, which comes from here.
