Distributed Folding is rapidly approaching the 1 billion mark. That means that there will probably be an update to the client that you will need to approve for your machines so that we can start on the next protein model. If you haven't already, go to l the download page and read through the "read me" for your client on how you can setup "unattended" auto update. Otherwise you will have to manually okay the client update on each machine before you can continue.
There is other great info there on how to set the "niceness" and run in "quiet mode", use a proxy, etc.
For a new team we are doing great. Heck I just started out testing the client for the fun of it and sharing my findings, and all of a sudden a new team is born. Gotta love it. Just wish I had another dozen machines to throw at other projects as well, but I couldn't afford the electric bill, even if I could afford the computers.
So now, who is going to catch me and pass me?

Once you lose interest, and stop crunching dfold for a few (months), I may be able to pass.

I might be able to pass you someday too. All of my Biology Major friends really like the screen saver, and don't mind if it runs under my name and not their own. I just wish I could tell how adversely the OpenGL scrfeensaver affects the performance. I doubt its much though, since the GPU is doing the work.

From what I have read, it can be up to 30% slower. But two computers at 70%, are still 40% faster than 1 computer at 100%. And hey, if you get the credit and your friends enjoy it, than everyone wins, especially the project. This is a case where every little bit helps.
Besides, while I have the most completed structures on the team at the moment (okay I did get a head start), Global Nomad (#12) has the best matching structure on the team to date, so really the project has beneifitted more from him than me. Of course it is all random chance, so a person who only contributes a few hundred structures a day, may be lucky enough to actually do the best work for the project.
Good luck, and wave if you pass me.

We have now made it into the Top 50 teams. Not too shabby for a bunch of rookies that have only been crunching for four days.
Looks like jbcool is making a run for the top spot. I think he still has a few days before he catches me.
Keep crunching guys, I love the competition and it is for a good cause.
(Hmm, now where can I get some more boxes real cheap)

Don't worry about me running for the top spot. I'm an old man and walking fast is about all I can do.
I agree the whole gang has done an excellent job of getting the time in the top fifty teams in less than a week and kicking out 1 million structures a day. If I wore a hat I would be tipping it to all the fine work everyone is doing.
Cheap boxes I just added three because I was walking backwards just trying to keep up with every one two weeks ago.

Yeah right! If you are older than me I would be surprised. I was already out of the service, before I turned on my first computer, and that was a Commodore 64. Had an Apple IIc and IIgs before I got my first mac in '86. I don't run any more myself, but I can walk fast and steady. I learned to touch type on the old manual (no electricity) typewriters. Funny thing is my Aunt who is in her late 70's, was writing programs before most people knew what computers were. She can't figure out Mac or windows operating systems, but I would bet she can still write raw binary code. Oh well, with all these youngsters around here, they need a few old fogies just to keep them on their toes.

Ok since we are both showing signs of wear from the years.
My first video game was pong, I remember the TRS-80 and sinclair computers and a hamburger place that had sold less than 100 thousand with yellow arches. Wrote code on a tty machine attached to a remote mainframe at a blazing 300 baud. Didn't get a Mac until the G4 came out.
I enjoy working with the youngsters, they teach me as much as I am able to teach them. I learned on the manual typwriters also and I still leave out characters and misspell words just like back then. You know your getting old when the kids call you sir.
Good day Sir Shaktai.

LOL: Don't forget the Heathkit computer that you built yourself and the old tube radios. And then a simple calculator cost as much as a Palm Pilot today. I always wanted one of those Sinclair computers. They were real state of the art

Yes I did forget about the Heathkit computer and working for my uncle at the TV repair shop checking tubes. I think the first calculator I had cost more than a palm does today. Did simple math and trig functions.

Wow, and I thought I was an oldy with stories of my Dad's Apple IIe (he still uses Appleworks on it btw), learning BASIC on a tandy, and using an Amiga in college.
Amiga gave way to the Mac, but I did go the route of a clone at one point. Matter of fact, my 700J Radius SuperMac w/ G3 500 card is happily crunching RC5 as we speak. The OS is Japanese 8.6 and it does just fine hooked into my network at work.

Nope your just one of those young kids that is able to enjoy the ocean out
there on the west coast. Got to work out in San Jose for two months and loved it. Land locked in Kansas at the moment. Glad to have you and Shaktai to challenge me in the Distributed folding project.
Shaktai don't go out and buy another cheap box, I'll have to pull those IBM RS/6k machines out of the storage shed. I will end up spending all my unemployment money on electricity.
Guess I'm going to have to get a hair cut and a real job.

Ok, I'm really bad at math! I thought it would take a couple of weeks to
pass you and it only took a couple days. The only other time I have been first at something is when I got ran out of town. Everyone thought it was a parade as they were all glad to see me go.
I'm going to try an enjoy this spot as I see Mikkyo has joined in and I know when those shoes start moving they will stomp me flat.
The whole team is doing great. Still a long ways to catch ColinT and Free-DC.

Congrats on being number one. You are now the Target.
Yes we have a long way to go to catch Free DC, and a lot of tough teams to pass along the way, but at this pace, nothing is impossible.

*grin* yes..... he is.
Man, if I could just run this machine even at night I'd up my production by probably over 200k/day. Sigh... things we do for marital bliss...
Oh, and I have added a machine or two to my DF group...

I'm now the Target? (yea bummer of a birth mark)
Great more people shooting at me.
No I waved as I went by Shaktai and I'm sure he laughed as I ran off the
road that he had paved for the rest of us to follow.
Understand the keeping the spouse happy. Have many married friends.
Some of them only get to upgrade when I retire old equipment.
Hey took the whole team to get us up to Team #37 in less than a week.
I felt bad about letting the team down on Ubero and just trying to do my part of getting the team to number one on distributed folding.

I was checking out Den's and Statsmans stats for dFold and right now there are only two teams between us & the top ten that are outproducing us, and not by much either. We have a long way to go from there to the #1 spot and would have to pass Ars Tech Team Stir Fry and the Knights that say Ni, first, along with a few other formidable teams.
If you haven't been following the Dist Folding forum, the project team is willing to at least look at the possibility of an Altivec enabled client. Should that come about (probably not before summer) then there is nothing that can stop us. No guarantees, but at least they will look at it. Let's keep crunching and let them know what a Mac users team can do.
I have temporarily put one of my computers back on Folding at home because they need the help and it is my other "favored" project. Both of these projects may lead to discoveries that can help millions and save lives. In my case (I am asthmatic) there is the possibility of improved quality of life for 10's of millions in the United states alone.
Let's do it!

Naw, I won't be swarming DF like I did seti or rc5 or even ubero.
Just a few machines running it.
I'm planning on building up my home farm in January, 2003, when AMD's new processor comes out.
Until then I'm limited on what I can run, and DF/folding don't make the cut.

Just a few he says! And overnight he jumps 6 spots in the ranking. I would love to have Scott or Mikkyo's ideas of "just a few". Guess I'm going to have to learn how to build those machines real cheap.

I think there just a few machines is like my just a few weeks, very misleading. I was going to try and put some distance behind me so I could move a machine over to folding@home, but I noticed that slipjack is right behind me blinking his lights for me to let him pass. If he keeps up the pace my dilithium crystals will be depleted in no time.
Took a look at the team numbers and they are very impressive for our small team. Great job everyone!!!

Holy Toledo!! We are crunching over 4 million per day right now, and there isn't another team crunching more between us and the #8 spot. Of course it will take a few days or so for us to get to #8. From there on up, it will be a battle.
Scott, remind me not to ever place my four up against your two.
I am trying to take a look at my PC motherboards, to determine if the CPU's can be upgraded. The Athlon (1600+) should be able to be but not certain how much. The Celeron is a different story. I am having trouble getting info on it. Of course even if I can upgrade them, I doubt they would be any match for yours. Of course I will also need to look at the cooling and power supply issues.

Congrats on getting the 3rd box working. I will now resign myself to moving down to the #4 slot in the near future.
As far as upgrading my cheap boxes they are both E-Machines. The AMD model came with instructions on how to upgrade the processor and Motherboard info. The Celeron model didn't have that info (but may have originally).
Celeron is a 1 ghz, and might be upgradable to 1.3. No Motherboard info other than it is 100mhz.
AMD is 1.4ghz (1600+ chip) and is supposed to be upgradable but I don't know how high. Motherboard is a 266 mhz bus Model number is an SN-KM133a for the Motherboard. Micro ATX form factor.
I have no idea about the Power supplies on either machine. Don't plan on any other upgrades, and don't even know if it is worth upgrading the CPU's.

Nope, they are too fast to be worth upgrading now.
If you want to, watch for the athlon deal that fry's does, and let me know.
If you want I can assemble the box for you and ship it, or help you build it.
It's probably more worth it to have 3 systems, and upgrade them on a rotating basis, but for me I have good cases so it's easy for me to do that.
Don't worry about me passing you, I don't think I have as much power as it seems. We'll see.
I'm saving for AMDs new processor, and planning on getting 2 new comps in like January, so until then I'll be slow(er), but those 2 comps will make up for it
BTW, I have some comps at home that can do whatever I want them to, but other then that I'm pretty much restricted as to what I can run.

Well if you pass me, it will be because my Athlon is on Folding@home right now. It can do a 5 point protein every 22 hours (the ones with the 9 day limit) But that cuts my Dist Fold production by 6000 per hr. I like both projects and was in the top 10 at F@H before I started DFold. The nice thing is that I can always bring the Athlon back over to dFold for a few days to play catch up and still have time to go back to a partially finished protein on F@H and complete it in time. I just wanted to give the F@H team a shot in the arm to help them get ahead a little. I will bring all my power back over here when it is needed.
And thanks for the info. The most I could get out of upgrading my two PC's would be a 30% boost if lucky, and for the price I could put together a third box. Hey if I am going to upgrade, I might as well build one. It isn't that I can't, it is just that I have to learn what to look for and get motivated to do the work. I am quite handy when I want to be. Of course if I do that, I will need to get a bigger ethernet hub or put my Mac tower on airport.

If I can just interrupt the oldtimers' ball we got going on here for a moment. I have a question for you gentlemen.
Have any of you experienced you G4s shutting you out when left running dFold (or any other project) on their own for a while? Essentially if I leave it crunching dFold (as a background process) either in the >console mode or aqua for a few hours the keyboard and mouse stop taking input. I end up having to reset which loses work in dFold.
I put a post on the PowerMac forum but so far have got zippo in response. I figured I might try a little closer to 'home'. Here's the link of the previous post as it'll soon drop off the bottom of the forum:

PS I had a 16K Sinclair ZX Spectrum (upgraded to 48K) back in the mists of time. Truly awesome in its day.

PS I had a 16K Sinclair ZX Spectrum (upgraded to 48K) back in the mists of time. Truly awesome in its day.</STRONG>
I'm running 2 instances of dFold on my 800DP, and have experinced no major problems up to now...
I have not run them 24/7, my max was about 16-18 hours (it's to noisey to leave the dualie on when I sleep!)...I also have not tested them in >console mode. If I get a chance later I'll give it a good and see what happens...
Marc
P.S I was late to the computer bandwagon and started with a C64...

My 800 G4 single processor (quicksilver) runs 24/7 and I have not experienced any problems. However I did experience similar problems with several different Macs when I used to live in Denver (a dry climate). The problem turned out to be static electricity. Don't know if that would apply in your case though.

Well let me grab my walker and check my machines.
Let me grab my bifocals and take a look here.
I have had all the machines running non-stop since the dFold change two days ago and all are working fine. I'm running an 800DP with two clients running, a 450DP with two clients running, and (2) 400 machines.
The only time I have ever seen any problems like this are when I was running 9.2 and when I had some memory that did not play well together.
Sorry sonny boy.

It might just be a 'feature' of the dual 450 (and possibly 500). [edit: just read the above post again - I guess it's not that.] When I have stopped playing with my new copy of Norton SystemWorks I'll fire up just one dFold client and go off and do something useful (but probably less interesting).
I'll try and narrow it down as there are a couple of variables that I can play with to see whether they have an impact. It might be something truly odd like my AirPort Hub's modem getting disconnected from my ISP.
I do have a builder in at the moment doing some work. It might be him using power tools. However I am using a surge protector and it doesn't happen when I'm at the machine. I'm clutching at straws a little, but I'll work through the possibilities and try and figure this one out. Beats doing any real work!
Thanks for your help.

PS The great thing about all those old home computers was the way in which the games programmers really pushed the envelope of the machine.

Oh one more thing that I have seen cause strange things is a weak power supply. I doubt that this is the problem but I have seen a power supply cause problems that were impossible to trace down to anything else.
Hope those straws your grasping have a drink on the other end as it may take a while to determine the problem. Please let everyone here know what you determine you problem to be once you figure it out. Might help someone else in the future.
Old computers make great end table also.

I believe I've found the reason for the crashes: my own meddling.
I've posted an explanation of what I think has been happening and my remedy in the PowerMac forum thread:

Thanks for all your help.

We are now #22. Our next victim has a 10 million structure lead on us, but is crunching less then a million a day to our 6+ million. We should pass them sometime tomorrow. We may also pass the #20 & #19 teams tomorrow as well. Let's see if we can make it so.

FYI: rkadowns noticed a memory leak in the Dfold client. So that may have added an extra twist to you issues.

Even with some of our power moved temporarily over to Folding@home, we have jumped from #22 to #19. It shouldn't be too long before we move to #18. After that we will have another 2 or 3 days before we move up again. I'll have my power switched back over before too long, as will some others, all except my Celeron which will be on SETI until the DF competion starts. We aren't far off from the top 10. We have made the top 10 producers for several days running and now for the week. Soon we will be noticed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines.

Early benchmarks with newest client.
Well this new protein is going to be slow. After 8 hours, I came up with these numbers.
iBook 600 - approx 1000 per hour
Power Mac 800 single - approx 1320 per hour.
Celeron 1.0 ghz - approx 1350 per hour
Athlon 1.4 ghz - approx 2500 per hour
These are very early benchmarks for a short period. From what I can see, the client's performance can vary by random chance, a fair amount. 24 hour benchmarks will give a better average. this also seems consistent with overall team outputs.
Looks like it is going to take us a little longer to make the top 10..
On the upside, we are still #8 in overall daily/weekly production.
