How long does it take to crunch a WU? I can't run my computer all the time, but even then, it's been 2 days and I'm at 27%... is this normal? Does anyone have sample data/benchmarks?

It depends on what protein you are crunching. My GNRA Hairpins took about 48 CPU hours each to finish on my G4 350.

I understand that most proteins crunch much faster than that, but I only got Hairpins while playing with the client.

I would recommend not using the gui client. it took forever to do and it seems that the cli client goes much faster (i'm not at my computer to give u the times)

Once I finish this WU, I'll try out the CLI thanks.

I just downloaded the GUI client to try out the project, and my first protein is a GNA hairpin. However, it seems to be running quite fast. Currently it is at 8% after only 40 minutes or about 12% per hour so far. It is running on an 800mhz single processor Power Mac with 7500 radeon graphics card. However, except to view it, I do hide the application. Client version 1.0 (v2.19a)

How would this likely compare with the CLI client?

EDIT: After 8 hours, I completed the first WU, project 313, and am now 20% into the second WU. Both are GNA Hairpins.

Maybe it's just luck on what protein you get... I finally gave up on the GUI version... 56% after days and days. (Not always on.. but this is a dual Ghz here...)

The CLI went much faster.. got my WU!!! WOOOOOt. ;p

Folding doesn't seem to be multi processor aware, but I bet you could run 2 simul.... right now I'm running Ubero so I don't want to go that route yet.

Yeah, I just wanted to see what my powermac can do on the project. Based upon what I can see, the larger hairpins would probably take from 21-24 hours on my machine. The smaller ones around 7 hours. Tonight I will be switching it back over to Ubero until we take and establish the lead. Then I will try the CLI on folding later.

I just watch the time as it folds and once I have enough of a period to do so, calculate the time according to the percentage completed. For instance, I know that I started at 11:40 pm pacific time last night. The current time is 6:20 pm. that is a total of 18 hours 40 minutes that it has been running. I have two units at 100% and 1 unit at 87% for a total of 287% divided by 18.666 hours gives me 15.37% per hour (numbers are rounded for ease). Since 100% is one unit, I divide 100 by the average per hour of 15.37 which gives a rounded average of 6.51 hours per unit on the three units currently done or being worked on. Of course, that is only an average. I don't know of any way to actually get the specific time for each work unit.

All of my work units so far have been the GNRA Hairpins of the smaller variety (project 313).
