I just got a protein A. Have they decided to give Mac users more than just the Beta Hairpin? Does this mean that the new core is in place?

You may have just connected to a different server or just got lucky, depending on how you see it. Occasionaly some Mac users will get different proteins. That Protein A will take a long time to crunch, but you have 9 days and it is worth 5 points. It took me typically 35 hours to do a protein A on a 1ghz Celeron. I have never gotten one on either of my two Macs.
I don't think they have the new core in place yet.. The last word is that Vijay hoped to release more "information" about it this coming Friday. It is something to look forward to. Be even better for the G4's when they release an Altivec enabled client which they supposedly are working on.

I think they have _finally_ stopped giving us just the 0.5 point dealies!

Yeah, I'd like to see what my Macs could do on a couple of those. I haven't been lucky enough to get one yet on either Mac.

When the Mac client first came out in beta, they allowed us at all of the proteins. It wasn't until later that we got out own server which only hands out the half pointers.
I tended to get Hairpins which took 3-4 days to crunch on my G4 350. The time limit was 6 days if I recall correctly.

Couldn't one just, uh, point their client at the PC server and get the larger proteins?

The client.cfg file does not contain an obvious pointer. It seems like the server it connects to is included in the binary.
I still have the beta2 CLI client which connects to the general server, and seems stable. If anyone is interested, we'll mirror it.

It looks like they are giving out protein A work units to Macs now. It has been 17 hours and it is 22% done on a 400Mhz G4.

How do you know what size you have? Can you only see it after you get credit for it or what?

Just short of 17 hours for me-
12% done
333 Beige G3
I'll look at my iMac and post its rate-
it's a 433 G4 upgraded iMac, I'm interested in how it does compared your 400 G4
I'm guessing my iMac will be slower due to the system bus ... (66 opposed to 100)

Alright!!! My power mac 800 picked up a proteinAg29aNat. That is a 5 pointer. Currently it is 26+% after 9 hours. It should complete in about 34 to 35 hours. That is a tad faster than my 1 gig Celeron (before I upgraded it) which took 35-36 hours. And just think, we haven't even gotten the Altivec enabled client yet.
Much nicer, because crunching those 1/2 point GNRA hairpins, would have only earned me 2.5 to 3 credits in the same time frame. This puts Macs on much more equal ground.

Looks like your 333 will take almost 6 days, but that is still well within the 9 day turn around. No reason why we can't have the bigger proteins. We can do as well as the PC's of equivelent power.

I'm 10 minutes from having had the unit for 24 hours and I'm 17 frames in (of 100)
So it looks like just under 6 days for these buggers on my G3
I can't waid for my fed taxes to come back- a 500 G4 is going in this baby
Probably the last upgrade she'll ever see (she was originally a 233)
The G4 won't directly benefit folding (YET) but will, because the Altivec will speed up the Aqua a bit.

you should be able to.
If my 333 is gonna do it in 6 six days, a 500 should be even faster,
