I know the bit about distributing the $$$, but what I'm interested is, what happens to all the people competing for the key? Is new key release, is a key released encrypted at a higher rate, or do rc5 just call it a day (and all those people join other distributed efforts

)?

Not sure.
They haven't said yet, but it may end, or dnet may have a new project.
