Courtesy of one hard drive failure (combined with my lack of cash to buy a replacement for while it's being RMAed), I'm out of the DF fight for a while. The failure took out 3GHz directly, and another 1GHz that now can't be added.
I also lost another 800MHz of iMac that I won't allow to be plugged in until either the lightning storms stop or my sister buys a surge suppressor.

So pretty much, I'm down to less then 2GHz of power.

Sorry.
Hopefully IBM will be nice enough to ship the replacement HD first, otherwise it could take a month to get the new one

I might be able to build a repair kit from my old parts to get you back on the road again. If I get the information fast enough it could ship out tomorrow morning.

I appreciate the offer, but netboot isn't super easy to setup.
I'll probably set it up on one of my old 8GB HDs, it's just that I don't want to set it up, then have to set it up again in 3 weeks.
It did take me two months to do the first time, so I figure it'll take a weekend the 2nd.

Maybe I'll decide it's worth it tomorrow, but right now I don't have the time.
Oh yeah, and I'm broke again

Not enough time and broke? I understand both of those issues.
I've been unemployed for nine months and can't say no to everyone that needs help. Just thought I would offer since I am one that would benefit from your experience. I've got other dragons to slay so your being able to figure out the netboot and sharing the information was worth a little cost to me. Good luck.

I'll try doing some setup and actually documenting this time, so go ahead and read thru it and then I'll try working with you to get it running.
I'm going to try and do my server upgrade tonight, which will mean I'll have a spare ECS mobo for netboot testing
It depends on how long it takes for the two tech support calls I'd like to make tonight, and whether the guy who helps with my server is online to reconfigure it.

Ok, something is horribly wrong.
I installed linux on one of my old 8GB drives.
And I get the same boot error.
So I tried a new IDE cable, with both drives.
And I get the same boot error.
So I tried both HDs and both IDE cables on another mobo.
And I get the same boot error.
So I'm going to try installing windows on the 8GB HD tomorrow, and see what happens.
This is really pissing me off though.

It doesn't happen very often but I have had it happen three times in 20 years. If windows doesn't install and boot up then you may have to fix the MBR. Best if you remove all partitions and then find an old version of dos (5) or so and issue the
command: fdisk (Drvie letter): /mbr

Any please feel free to correct me or offer other suggestions.
