I have just gotten back my old laptop from my sister. I want to put it to work on SETI, but it does not have a modem and I cant connect it to the internet. It has an Ethernet card (though no Ethernet to access). I can connect it through appletalk to my current computer. However, when I run the old computer’s seti from my new one, the downloaded data does not transfer over to the old computer. I tried copying the seti data over to the old computer, but I still need to connect to the server initially so that it knows who I am. Any ideas? Is there a way to have the old computer use the newer one’s modem? If there is no way of doing seti, is there an easy way to run RC5?

How about running the Apple software router on your primary box to allow the AppleTalk speaking portable to talk to your ISP using the dial-up TCP/IP connection? I believe that the router software is now a free download from Apple.

If the computer that does have an internet connection is running OS X then you can configure it to act as a router. Or if it's OS 9 you could use IPNetRouter to share the internet connection.

My main computer is OS X and my older one is 8.1. How do I set up the OS X one as a router?

I have a 9500 desktop and Bronze Powerbook hooked up together via
ethernet. I installed MacOS X on my Powerbook. I connect the Powerbook to the internet via PPP and allow the desktop to go through it to the Internet.o connect two computers to a single dial-up connection.

Sounds a little like your setup except that the modem is in the portable rather than the desktop.

Or try these instructions. Although this guy was using Airport, the same principlpes apply to ethernet and PPP. He even mentions that a little.

Good Luck

This may sound dumb, but does OSX support floppies, you know, the things Apple dumped back in 1998?

If so, doess the internet-connected machine have a floppy disk (internal or via USB)?

I have another way, one I still use with RC5, but it is dependent on those two conditions.
If you put a bullseye on yourself, don't be surprised when someone takes a shot at you.

Transferring data to and from the two computers is not a problem. I simply created an appletalk network. But actually, after a little bit of trying, I decided to explore other DC projects. I've currently put it on Evolution@Home under the TeamMacNN banner (not advocating moving any resources over there yet as the program and the website are still not very user friendly). But, all I have to do is copy the results text file onto my internet capable computer and e-mail it as an attachment. Usually this would be a pain, but since it allows a non-internet capable computer to crunch, i thought its better to pioneer new space with my Powerbook 1400/133 rather than let it collect dust.

You could also just let RC5 run for days and days and days... And then copy the entire RC5 folder off the old one, onto the new one, run it and update the buffers, then copy it back. Since it's an older Mac it could run for weeks on a 2000 unit buffer.

I looked the site over, and even participant registration is manual via email. Could not find stats, much less teams, anywhere.

For the curious, here is the link to Evolution@home. They do have a Mac client, but the site feels dead.

I had checked Evolution@Home and even crunched a few units for them. Not much feedback there. They have no stats page yet. No forum, and the process is entirely manual. Pretty much a shoe-string project that is having trouble getting off the ground from what I can see so far.

I have been meaning to try to contact the coordinator, if I am successful, I will let you know what I find out. If the project has any life left in it, I was considering offering forum space if they wanted it, since I have room to spare. Since they are one of the very few projects with clients that will run on Mac OS 8 & 9, it would be nice to see them keep going. Without stats though.....?

Anyone working Evolution@Home, please stop by and give your feedback.

For those who are interested, Evolution@Home is alive and well, just growing slowly. They do have a Mac Client for both OS-X and Classic OS. It is suitable for older computers. The process of uploading and downloading work units is not automated, but it is a good program for someone who has older macs or needs to be able to no-net of extended periods of time.

Reader, Laurence is working on a method of posting high scores for teams, and I will let you know when he gets that up and going.

The new Evolution@Home stats / high scores are up. jarling, you and Team MacNN are listed. According to Laurence Loewe, these will be updated once or twice a month.

Hehe. I like the way they calculate the stats. "Team MacNN" i.e. myself, is ranked 93rd for the number of giga-individuals calculated but 23rd for computer time.

Keep crunching you Powerbook 1400.
