I've realized I've got many problems to deal with here at home. Since I'm only on a 56K dial-up, I can't have my computer's conecting all the time. In fact, since the computers eat up electricity and produce heat, I can't run them all the time. It just doesn't make sense to have the CPU's and the air conditioner battling it out.
So I'm gonna stop all crunching on my PC, since it doesn't even have a modem, and crunch a tiny bit of RC5 on my G4. I'll update it's buffers when I sign on to check email and news and stuff.
I am however going to be posting on the MacNN forums, since I've got a lot of free time. So I'll be the opposite of the people who crunch but don't post much!
PS I am looking into using the G4 as a router, but I don't want to be connected to my ISP 24/7, which might have to happen if I turn routing on. I know it was that way with IPNetRouter, but I don't know about OS X.

I know what you mean about the electicity and air con issues...
I'm only in the cold old United Kingdom, but I have 5 machines (alas not all crunching, guess I have to make money with some of the machines!) on 24/7 in my relatively small office...and face the same kind of dilema...
Combined with the 56k issues, I don't blame you one little bit...
Over the last few weeks I have had to tone down my already extremely modest crunching because of work issues, crashing routers, and just a general need to unplug for a while...also the constant howl of G4 fans! they are really starting to get to me.
If the 1ghz powerlogix cube upgrade is fanless, I'm seriously considering a few as an option instead of a quicksilver or two...at times it really sounds like a helicopter landing pad around the place!
Glad to see that you're staying around the forums though, regardless of crunching, it is always the community that makes it all fun!
Marc
P.S. While I'm on the noise subject (excuse my rant, but it has been one of those days!), what gets to me is that my sisters new 2.2 gig P4 is just so quiet! You can hardly hear the fan at all even when it is being used flat out...my dualie is at least 4 times louder...hmmm

Too bad most computers need AC otherwise you could just turn off the AC and suffer. All in the name of sceince.
Also, I found that most of these clients that are not so modem friendly work just fine behind a wireless access point thats connected by modem. To the software, it thinks it's attched to a network. Ah, if money were not object...
I myself, being from Phoenix, AZ will be wishing for both you and I for a very SHORT summer.
Cheers!
RIP

Thats another good reason to be in college. I don't pay for my electricity. I don't mind the fans really. Last semester my room had a 500 MHz TiBook, a Dual G4 500Mhz and a P4 1.4 GHz running 24/7, so I'm used to the noise. Next semester is gonna be even better. We have got a triple that has a side room. We're gonna make it into a server room.

You know, I put the tower to sleep for a minute or two the other day just to remember what it's like not having the thing going 24/7 like it's been for the last 3-4 months. Wow! It was so quiet in my room. I can't believe I've learned to sleep with it running all night. I live in the fog bound parts of San Francisco so AC isn't an issue for me. My electricity bill is high enough already!!

I too got used to the noise of my CPU's being on all night. Mostly because my dorm has two rooms, one for studying and computers, and a bedroom. I also really miss the always on internet access, and I also miss the speed. I did enjoy the fact that I didn't pay for electricity or other utilities. Oh well, I'll be back in September, and will have everything up and running full strength them. Until then my CPU's get a summer vacation.
