I was reading OCN's bulletin board and there was a thread about wlonh getting fired! When I came back here, I in fact did see that the SETI forum no longer has wlonh as a moderator!?! I understand that MacNN is a business and does not have to answer to a private citizen; however, I would like to give my opinion.

Wlonh is a first-rate moderator. He does not lead by being corporate. He leads by being human. Like most people, wlonh is compassionate about what he loves-Apple, Inc. and Mac related items. I am not a programmer, so I do not know anything regarding UBB, but from what I read about the "hacked" post, it was a screenshot, not a hack. Again, I do NOT know anything about UBB.

Yes, wlonh was guilty. He was guilty of preserving what he loved, guilty of preserving and protecting a purely academic environment in the SETI forum. The SETI project is purely academic, and the atmosphere of the Team MacNN forum should and was the same. Yes, wlonh was guilty, but what was the crime? He protected what he loved. In a way, protected who he loved, because the Team MacNN community is closely woven. There are no corpreal bodies to associate with the multitude of posts, only screen names. Whom among us has relatives who live a long distance away from us? Whom among us are college students who live a long distance away from us? Are these people more than the collective phone calls, letters, cards, and emails? Yes. Would we protect them if the need arose? Hopefully, the answer would be, "Yes".

It is my personal opinion that no wrong has occurred. Yet, I am only an observer and do not have all of the facts. Thank You.

As a former member of Team MacNN when it was in it's infant state, I personally saw wlonh put a lot of time and effort into building and promoting this team. It all started off with his Thrid-Party post asking if anyone even used SAH.

hehe......

Anyways, OCN has a great team. MacNN has a great team. Let's just remember this is a science project but if you need to get competitive, then let's keep it classy.

For the record, wlonh was not fired, but chose to quit. We had asked him to take a break for a few days while the hole episode subsided, but definitely wanted him to stay on, but he sent a short note saying that he no longer wanted to give his services to MacNN.

He was dedicated and very helpful to us and our readers. I hope he reconsiders =).

Misha,

I joined KWSN about 3-4 months ago. I'm a huge M. Python fan. Plus I added some PC's to my collection and I'm outputing about 40-70 WUs/Day. This is a great team and it has a great leader (wlonh). KWSN is alittle bit more competitive in the higher ranks.

Seriously, you've guys have proved me wrong so far!! I never thought that Team MacNN would be it the spot that it is in now. Good for you guys. I stop by a lot to check out your guys stats and posts here on this forum. Just too bad that some ppl have polluted this board with their non-sense.

Keep up the good work.

Hello...please do not see this as putting my nose where it doesn't belong...(and if ya do...tell me in a civil tone and I will leave...)

I had a wery small (almost non-existent) conversation with wlonh, starting out I was polite and well mannered...not breaking any of your rules...(they are not to hard to read...) the only thing I did different from "other" new members, was that I stated I was also a member of OCN...I got edited and deleted in direct violation of your own rules...

The result was that I asked if the alphabet was the same on MAC's as PC's and if my messages came up garbled...Not very polite I admitt...What I got back was name calling...I didn't get the chance to reply or read all of it, so I'm not gonna refer to what was said...

But I do not expect a Moderator to behave that way...and it doesn't matter if the one he talks to uses MAC's or PC's because that wasn't the issue, neither was it about defending against anything...

Combining this and other thing with the allegations about hacking... groundless or not...(I'm not gonna argue this point...no matter what I think) does make it clear that if not making atleast one serios error, wlonh is seriosly clumsy and stepped on a lot of toes...
And if he's not man enogh to admitt he made an error, I woudn't want him as a Mod...

Don't see this as a single minded attack on your ex-Mod...He migth be a god guy ... And I just got him on the very worst side... but if he can't accept people who doesn't use MAC's, he can't be very funtional in the real world...Can he??!!

Oh...btw if you guys wanna edit this...I'm taking a little screen shot...a little paranoia curtesy of wlonh...

I think the point is that the seti@home forum at macnn is for team-members. Maybe I haven't read the rules well (okay, I haven't read them lately), but if OCN wants to post messages for team macnn people, it should be in the lounge. There's no practical way to enforce this, and trying to enforce would probably only cause more trouble.

OCN, I think this seti forum is a place where you all don't belong. There are other public forums where we can talk, if talking is what you want to do. People take rivalries to different extents. I, for one, don't want to take this rivalry personally; I'm very content to keep it team vs. team, as much as this is a contest (=not that much).

I want wlonh back because he knows a lot about macs and about the way the forum works, about team macnn, etc etc etc. Whatever crap goes on between Team Macnn and OCN needs to be moved elsewhere or else it should be deleted. Post a UT server to play team deathmatch, do something constructive. But the way things are, this just sux.

I too am from OCN, and mean no harm here, just saying hi and keep up the good work. If it weren't for competition we'd still be sitting in caves picking our asses!

If it this forum was only meant for team members it would be a private forum, which is VERY easy to set up, that's how it could be inforced... just making sure you all know.

Another note... if I had a Mac, i would certainly be running seti on it! I've actually dreamt about dual G4s... scary thought for me, especially since I don't even shudder! Yee haw, keep it off!

wlonh razzed me a lot since I switched to Ars Technica, but it was all in a good spirit. I hope he will find his way back after he has a little time to himself.

Like him or not, wlonh is the spiritual leader of the team. Without a spiritual leader, teams just go down the tubes. Look at O'Grady. What a sorry team. I stuck with it far longer than I should have. And without wlonh here, MacNN can very easily go the same way.

If wlonh had said anything about using the lounge or this had been private...instead of using his powers as a Mod to delete/edit, some thing migth have been differntly...

But I think this is the rigth place...as we wanted to talk to the memebers of MacNN SETI team...

Sorry I'm short of time... be back later to follow up on this thread...and possibly say some more on this topic...

See ya!

How hard is it to create new forums? How about having a Team MacNN Seti forum and a general Seti forum? Make the Team forum private so we can cheer each other on and the general forum open to anyone so that we can hem and haw and whatever. Easy cheese.

Isn't that what the Lounge is for? We don't want to have too many fora.

Yeah, I think that's what the lounge is for. Could we just ask you OCNers, respectfully, to communicate to us through the MacNN lounge instead of the team's forum? Honest, I'm not trying to be amazingly anal. Fairly anal, but not amazingly anal. It's just easier to keep a fire out if you take away the fuel instead of trying to stomp on it every time smoke starts to rise.

We will answer any post with the same amount of civility from us as is evident the post...
I can't speak for everyone, but personally I hold no bias because you use a diff system... just remember, this is our turf, and expect you to respect our rules as we respect yours.

Just realized MacNN's loss of wlonh...
I want to say that I also hope he returns.
Over the last year or so, I have had a few chances to banter with him on the forums and I will miss his knowledge and input. Still don't understand this crap with OCN... they're just another SETI team... No blood, no foul Zack
