It is traditional for sports teams to post inspirational quotes in the locker rooms before a game. Specifically, quotes from the other teams. Since I started reading these quotes from another seti team, I have been inspired to triple my WU output.

Obviously these MacNN chaps aren't overwhelmingly stable. I wouldn't want to start a war, as much fun as that would be, with the, shall we say, less witty. Its just not as entertaining when the other side really can't fight back.

Goodbye, Team MacNN...
Surely, there are more CPUs that we can all put SETI on. Or just let SETI run for more hours.

Everyone, please do not post ammo on their boards. They trashed me too, but I have no plans to grace their boards with my posts. With a little luck, they will post inflammatory stuff in the Lounge and help us sign up more people.

all quotes selected "randomly". no animals were harmed in this production. got mac? get crunching!

I think it may be time to convince my brother that Seti is good, and he should run it on his iMac as well....

Great post reader50, have u ever considered being an inspirational speaker?

I don't mean to sound like I'm soliciting, but OtherWorld Computer http://www.memoryhq.com has 32 MB 72 pin SIMMs (60ns) for $38.95. These are compatible with many older Macs (61/71/8100, Performas, etc.) and this is a good price for the chips.

If you have an older Mac and want to get it to running SETI, it must have at least 24MB of RAM. To see if your computer can use this chip, go to Apple's Tech Info Library http://til.info.apple.com/ and search for the machine. If the memory requirements say something like "72 pin SIMM, 80ns or faster" then this chip will work for you. (The "ns" is nanoseconds and refers to the speed. Smaller numbers indicate faster chips. In modern notation, the 60ns chip is 16.7 MHz and 80 ns is 12.5 MHz. For comparison, iMac Revs A-D use 66 MHz memory chips, which would be 15 ns.)

The older computers will increase your CPU time per workunit. My CPU time per workunit has increased 40 minutes (16h40m to 17h20m), but I am now cranking out one workunit per about 11 hours real time. I let a PowerMac 7100/80 and a Performa 6290 crunch on the packets a while. My iMac (Rev B) is the only computer connected to the Internet (aDSL). As soon as a workunit is sent and another is received, I stop the older machine that has the most work done, trade its Data folder for the iMac's, and start it back up. Now the older machine is working on a new packets, and the iMac has the packet that is closest to being sent off.

It works, I'm gaining ground on pdjr (#69) and Neocyberdude (#68). I had been #69, but "The Bishop" (#50) joined the group. I AM NOT COMPLAINING! AN EXTRA 749 WORKUNITS IS NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT! Sorry, I felt it was necessary.

very well plaid, and with such class.

Hats off.
I to run everything I can get my hands on. My slowest mac is an over clocked 75/100 running @205 mhz. It is a pig, about 1 wu every 23 hours on gui 2.03

Well, it worked for me! I only put seti on after the whole OCN thing (good one OCN )
And now, after reading that... well, I'm gonna equip the 5500 with seti too... right after I get it some RAM.

I have been a lurker for long enough. This enrages me enough to join your team. I don't have fast computers, but I have been a seti user for a very long time. I will buy a new dual G4 as soon as they hit 800 Mhz to really help. I currently have 3 computers running it. The fastest being my 333 iMac. Hope this helps. My WU should put me in about 45th place on the team ( don't know if all my WUs transfer though? ).

I will also have my father switch to ours too. He doesn't even know what seti is besides a pretty screen saver, so he won't know if I switch him. I will ask my brother and his friend to join too, but that is doubtful.

Welcome to the team, MZ. I've read some posts where people didn't want to use older macs because they might raise the average WU completion time. Bring it all in, your imac is faster than any of the 4 macs I've got crunching right now. (crunch, crunch)

Also, while the Seti page says that your units won't transfer from another group, mine have: one of the few inaccuracies that make me happy.

Well, I've left Seti on every machine here at my office that I can-- except for the boss' laptop, and anyone who has asked me to remove it..

Once Popular Power gets its Mac client running, however, I'm moving to that instead.

pcurtner, popular power's already out. not much of a program, but it's here. the installer comes with the latest mrj and loads as a screensaver (plus the little icon on the menu bar like seti). can't customize a thing on it, and you can't run it in the background, but i'm averaging about 50mins/wu on a bw300. they've got some work to do, but i've never had any problems/crashes associated with it..

another shared computing program. like seti, you download a client program to perform calculations for researchers. i think popular power has clients to help you work for for-profit groups (and why would i want to do that) or non-profits. the client i d/led helps do research on flu virus strains.
www.popularpower.com check it out yourself.
i'm not trying to pull people away from seti, and certainly not from macnn's team. but aliens or no, a cure for influenza would be an incredible blessing to the world.

Danometer, www.ramseeker.com often tracks the lowest prices for RAM. The 32 MB SIMM that you mentioned for older Macs can be obtained for US$25.49 http://www.macseek.com/simm32.shtml

I wish I had known that two weeks ago. Oh well, c'est la merde.

Maybe we do need an optimization page, for both software *AND* hardware. I've already got a RAM Disk article written for one; I haven't had time to write anything else yet.
